Yes this is the case. But considering audio nirvana is coming out of the line-out, why even bother with the ordinary HP jack?

The correct answer is...
If you want to use both headphone and line out, you don't want the mod. You want the Classic.

OR the correct answer is...
Rockbox the thing... the headphone jack will really please you as well as the line-out. Rockbox also plays your ipod music anyway. You don`t need to convert what you already have on your ipod.

since you are in macau

you may want to try over at sgheadphones.net and inquire about the gmod (same thing as imod apparently, but the people that do it is in singapore, so closer to you)

Rockbox your 5th gen and keep the money for a better LOD and amp.

Even my non hi-fi friends can hear the quality differences with the rockbox's EQ compared to stock.

nope.

technically the 4G imod can be used heaphone/line out with an in-line headphone or third party attenuator to control volume.

you dont need an amp with a 4G imod. although by default most people who go to that expense, me included amp the thing.

Very smart observer.

Well the headphone out is not a must to me only I need to give up some cables I have and buy some new options. In fact, the dependence between the iMod and ALO cables is the thing I need to consider seriously. I am not saying ALO cables are not good as I am using too, but I will have less option to choose from other vendors even their cables are better. Correct me if I wrong here.

Appreciated all your guys' recommendation. I think I have to raise the questions to another level after hearing your feedback:

1. Is there anyone have experience to comment the differences between iMod, gMod and Rockbox?

2. My favorite of sounding is natural and warmth, no emphasizing in any certain frequency. My requirement of source is transparent and details, minimize any specific toning. Which option is the closest with my requirements?

"My favorite of sounding is natural and warmth, no emphasizing in any certain frequency"

this may in somes eyes contradict itself, as warmth would infer some empahsis/change at a certain frequency to make it sound warm.

imod and gmod are two similar hardware solutions

rockbox is an alternate software firmware/interface which gives you great choice over sound intricacies and alike and allows you to playback flac amonst other that wouldnt be natively allowed with appleOS

i have only heard imod and rockbox together, some claim the gmod is as good as imod but with slight differences in signature.

essentially the same thing though.

i would worry about the emphasis on warmth after deciding on the source (imod...etc) as you can tune that in your rockbox or other eq's or even with your amp choice and phones.

Some people still use their iPods for casual listening on the street and on the go. I use PX-100s for this kind of listening. One of the main advantages of the iPod is its portability. You can take it places you can't take normal rigs.

See ya
