iMod 5.5G or iPod 6G Classic?

Thread Starter
I want to upgrade from my current 30G 5G iPod, I just wonder what is the best option in sounding, iMod 5.5G or iPod Classic 6G? I use both headphone and dock output.

How much is an iMod (iPod + modding + LOD) these days?

I'd say, look at a Pacemaker. It is 520euro/$US715, and it isn't out yet, but it does have 120gigs of space, a line-level out, a headphone out, and a digital out. It's supposed to be very good.

IMHO;

iMod for sound qual.

classic for capacity.

while i don't have a 6G, i would be pretty confident that the 5G imod would sound better, if that's all you're after...

I have the same setup, ipod video 5th gen 30gb, and I rockboxed the thing.
very happy with the change in quality of sound . It did not cost me anything as regard money, only time invested in learning how to setup the rockbox on the ipod.

I do not have a very long time of use in listening to the ipod but since I installed rockbox, I adjusted the bass level to exactly what I liked and it drives very well using the headphone jack. With the line-out I have one listening done with it and it was very positive.

Try rockboxing your ipod, if you do not like it you can remove it from the ipod without dammage to the ipod.

Needs a "small" learning curve to adjust the rockbox. 2 days ago I succeded in "bricking" the ipod rockboxed. The screen froze ON and no controls were responding. I let the battery drain out , recharge the ipod the next day and reinitialise the database on rockbox.

Things sounds great!

another one for the imod. the mod is 250USD, which is quite a bit but it turns the thing into one of the best (and largest) portables out.

iMods have to be used with an amp right? Just wondering.

X2, very well stated.

The best sounding DAP is the iMod + Amp option. Going the iMod+Amp route will cost 2.5->4x more than just a Classic by itself (depending on the amp), but the gain in SQ is more than worth it.

X3, nothing comes close to iMod
(anything I listen to now, I think of the iMod and its sweet sound, I miss it )

I like how everyone missed the point that the OP wants to retain his headphone out. They continue to give him advice that ignores what he is asking for!

The correct answer is...
If you want to use both headphone and line out, you don't want the mod. You want the Classic.

See ya

the iMod 5.5G only modifies the line-out. The headphone out remains usable, in its original state.

Is that different than the 4g imod?

Thanks for the correction
Steve
