Tiny computer with USB output to accomodate Pico

Thread Starter
Portable computer + Pico. That would be a pretty darn good rig, might be that unfair iMod killer as a portable source. I've ruled out using my laptop because, well it's a gaming laptop and it hurts my back.

Is there such thing? A tiny handheld/PDA/small computer that can use Foobar, has USB 2.0 output (without a humongous dock), and mobility-class battery life?

The Sony Vaio UX series comes into mind. I recall one head-fi member had that with a pair of Etys with it.

I use a Nokia N800 - it doesn't have the ability to use USB however. But, it is discontinued (the N810 is being released next month) and can be purchased for less than $250. It is Linux based and can run a number of Linux programs, including a Rhapsody client that can stream over WiFi. It can take up to two 16gb smart cards.

It isn't quite the audiophile machine you want, but its the best small handheld I've tried and I've tried a lot of them. The Vaio UX series is expensive.

A better alternative might be the Asus mini PC 701 that has just been released in the UK and is expected in the US in the next two weeks. It is a Linux PC too and has 3 USB outs. It can also run XP. Unlike the N800 it is a clamshell. I think it has a 7 inch screen.

I think Katysax is referring to this:

I too am waiting to see how well it can run XP.

That is a bitching unit! Why did you have to show it?

If you're at all interested in the littlest PCs, go to www.umpcportal.com

The Raon Everun is a smashing unit and dirt cheap.

Here you go:

iPhone killer. Been around a bit longer, but it's a notebook first, phone second. I've played with the non phone version in person, and that thing is rediculous. By FAR the coolest gadget EVER.

Worst idea ever. The Advantage is the size, weight and price of a true umpc, but it isn't! It runs Windows Mobile. Therefore it's an extra large PDA.

Useless.

Check out umpcportal.com for much better devices.

Email has been sent to the 02 manufacturer. BTW tried to go to your website and something comes up regarding the name being shared. Can you post your new website address? Thanks.

Fujitsu u810 comes to mind. It only has one USB port though.

I will use my Fujitsu P1610, which is almost 40% bigger, but faster CPU, two USB ports, and a useable keyboard.

For a cheaper tiny laptop, check out the Asus Eee PC.

It is going to be under $300, but it does not have a real HDD, it uses flash memory in 2, 4, and 8GB configurations.

I'd say a solution would be velcro the Pico and a small USB HDD to the back of the LCD lid.

The gloss black finish of the Pico would match perfectly with the OQO 02.

You'll need to spend another $200 on the extended battery to get any useable battery life, though. The stock battery's life sucks.

It's the smallest full Windows Vista PC, though. With an active digitizer tablet too.

The Raon Vega is interesting.

http://www.umpcportal.com/modules/ne...p?storyid=300/

Not too much larger than the OQO Model 02, and it comes with an extended battery by default. And it has 2 USB host ports, and one USB device port, which means the Raon can operate as an external device (direct HDD access from another computer).

Wow... you don't really see many people buying a laptop to accommodate for other audio components.
