Mini TDA1543 DAC kit

Does anyone around here have any knowledge of, or experience with this Optical/coax DAC? After getting interested in the Alien DAC which i still plan on building, i started looking around for other options as well.


It looks like a good kit, and the chips etc used seem to be well known and thought quite well of.

From the Pictures it doesn't look too difficult to build, the only thing that slightly worries me is the chip on the bottom if the board. Will have to be extra careful!

The only problem i can see so far is that well, it won't fit in a mint tin!!

Looks like im going to be busy over the coming months!

If you can get past the whole NOS DAC part it's pretty cool little DAC.

Non-OverSampling DAC. Im sure someone can explain the difference, because I cant.

Ok, i understand sampling, and sampling rates etc.

Whats the down side to NOS?

Nos dacs do not use steep filtering to remove the 'steps' in the analogue output waveform.
One of the effects of this is to roll of the high frequency output a little.
Another effect is that they can make engineers grind their teeth

I have built a number of my own 1543 portable dacs, they sound nice,
but not quite 'right' too my ears.
How good they sound depends on the designers circuit implementation, not all
nos dacs are equal.
I built mine point to point and they are very small.
The 1543 is also quite a hungry beast and my dacs run from a 9.6 v battery pack [regulated to 8v] consuming around 80 ma.
So not the best portable solution.

looks like a great kit. If someone builds this, please let me know! I really like the TDA1543, but I've never really thought it sounds good stacked.. just concentrate on a good implementation, and it will sound phenomenal.

what you have to worry about on toslinks is mostly just the voltage (is it a 3v or a 5v part).

you probably need 5v parts but just check to be sure.

Just order Gigalab Moon DAC mk2 from Ebay, it sounds good and only cost $200.
