I believe the reviewer on kakaku actually says they are a few steps up compared to the D5000. I could be wrong though, my Japanese isn't that great and the translation isn't too clear:

"ATH-ESW9 (made in Japan) is also on a few steps for the sound quality and the workmanship of the product by the half price the price more than AH-D5000 of DENON (made in China)."
Can you post a link to these reviews? I'm having a hard time finding them, and would like to see if any of my Japanese friends can translate it.

How is the headband? It looks a bit top heavy and covered in leather?

Just ordered mine last night. Look forward to finding the time and posting some comparisons between them and PX 100s, iGrados and KSC75s. Hope they are worth the price!

Mine just came in today...My first impression is about their size. These things are tiny. I just put them on and they fit very well. I am going to have to let them burn-in some so that the lower frequencies can mature. The micro-ZOTL does best so far with this one at this stage of burn-in. To me the audio feels tight out of the box. The mids and highs are crystal clear and with very good timbre. I will have to get an extension for it. Any suggestions?

I can see how quick first impressions might come off a bit negative especially if you are used to something else (UE9s).

I want these but it pains me that they are ~$210 at amazon.co.jp.

Does anyone know of a better way of getting these to America than paying bt/ac/pj close to $300?

This is one coming together rather well for me. I really am enjoying it more than my ATH-ANC7s today at work. Compared with the ESW9 the ANC7 is very fatiguing..

The bass in coming out very well.

I started my own thread on these since they deserve all the attention they are getting here.

Edit; one day later and the width of the sound image is getting bigger. The sound is very good for such a small headphone, WOW....

Can anyone compare how ESW9 perform against Yuin PK-1 in term of SQ & soundstage?

Not me I only had the PK-1 for about two days before sending it back.

Im using mine now for a few days and im really enjoying them. The Isolation works perfectly, even in germanys storm & rainy weather, it blocks out ambient noise with avrg listening volume ie. you wont hear any rain while walking with them. I also dont experience any kind of resonance with walking, the headphones and the cable are dead silent, no microphonics or other noises.

The sound is fantastic, without wanting to hype this headphone i think it's safe to say it's the most capable portable headphone to date (IEMs aside).
There arent any real "high-end" contenders to begin with.
The HD25-1, im officially not a fan of it , but seriously the sennheiser doesnt have much to offer against the ESW9 unless you specificly prefer it's kind of sound. Closed in with almost no soundstage, strong kickbass, slightly metallic mids & slightly sibliant highs. People might see it as a closed grado but that's not really the case. I love grados but i dislike the HD25-1. The Sennheiser is really missing the mids to match grado. And even grado has more soundstage.

Bizkid, sorry if you've already mentionned that, but do you use the cans straight out the headphone jack or with a portable amp ?
I'm planning on using it also with my laptop, headphone output or maybe a cheap amp, I think it's ok (not perfect for this class of headphones of course) but could you confirm please ? Thx

Just curious, bizkid, do you think these are in the same league as full-size circumaural headphones (like a lot of those you have heard in the past)? Or is it still constrained by its portable design?

I have to agree with this assessment concerning the ATH-ESW9. If you are interested in a true good sounding portable you need look no further.
