Sony NWZ-A818. I've had Creative Nomad, a Rio, a couple Ipods, and my wife had a Sansa and a Samsung. The superiority of the Sonys sound quality was easily audible to even my not-as-picky wife. It's not sterile or thin, but maintains a balanced, full response across the audible range.

The only headphone source that I've personally heard that bests it (without amp) is the EMU 1616's PCMCIA card output.

Haha, I will cast my vote on MiniDisc. Especially the MZ-RH1. And would really iMod be portable? Doesn't it go in the transportable category. It is so dependent on the amp, otherwise it is just expensive paperweight.

The iMod + SuperMicro IV sounds pretty portable to me.

I'd really like to try MD players some day, maybe I can find a good one in a used store in Japan.

Well yeah that would be a reasonable enough size, considering that my cable is so long (3m) its like extra baggage with my MD. Lol, when thinking of amps I think of the RSA ones, those are quite big.

If you mean the new flash one, I believe somebody did it. It was a very positive one.

I listened to a few Sony flash one's and I wasn't exactly impressed. Maybe the new gen is better, but I felt that the NW-HDx is more consistently keeping up with SQ.

The NW-S7xx upwards (including the latest 808/818) sound really good.

The NW-HD5 was a great HDD, but the latest Sony flash offerings sound even better (imo).

Is there anywhere you can try the 808/818's and hear them for yourself?

Of the players I have heard till now the cowon a2 totally blew me away listening through a super.fi 5 pro. The most balanced and powerful sound I have heard.

I also think that the a2 is better than d2. Cowon A2 is the best stock DAP I have heard to date. Really awesome! It is surprising to see why this DAP does not receive much praise for it's sound quality. I guess it maybe cos of the size. It is pretty big but then again it is a PMP.

I would like to know what others think about this player.

It actually does, except that when people think SQ and Cowon, the D2 unfortunately overshadows it.

Btw I've never heard the A2. Sounds interesting.

So, for me it'll have to be either the iHP120 or H340. I have both, and they're close. Now I'm looking for something new. Maybe the TrekStor Vibez?!?
