Do you often find people think you're crazy spending over $20 on headphones? - Page 9

Some folks think I'm crazy for spending what I have on HP (and I'm on the low side in this forum). But there are always a select few that understand. (Even when I paid well over $100 for a phono cartridge in the early 70's) Now I don't mention what I spend unless it's someone that I know appreciates good sound - and then I don't need to say anything because they know.

I find it interesting that many people will $$$$ on crap or clothes, etc. but because they spend relatively small amounts at any one time they don't realize how just much they actually spend. LOL I know how much I spend on this, and every other, obsession.

The French Chef had those same ideas, too.

The late, Julia Child, "The French Chef" once commented that she never understood why anybody would pay more than $10.00 for a wristwatch. I'll bet she paid more than that for kitchen knives.

That's funny in this topic. I'm sure you are being serious, but unless you were being facetious, you obviously have never priced good cutlery. But it definitely emphasizes the point - I'm sure there are plenty of owners of $5,000 watches who would wonder why anyone would spend more than $10 on a knife, while people on forums just like this one drool over Japanese folded steel chef's knives costing $2,000.

Not really an apt comparison.

Knives are tools that increase in cost with increased utility.

I can get watches out of gumball machines that are more accurate than my $100 Orient titanium slide-rule automatic - but i didn't buy it for accuracy.

My wife thought I was nuts but I just put my foot down and told her If I didn't get these expensive 'phones I'd never have sex with her ever again.

So, once she'd finished laughing I changed that to 'take her for Sushi ever again' and she immediately shaped up and complied with my wishes

I've just spent the equivalent of $170 for replacement pads.

My wife thinks I am crazy with my amps and headphones. I tried to get her into some better earbuds by giving her some pk2,s but, I don't think she can hear a difference. She never commented on the SQ difference between apple earbuds or the pk2,s. If she gets on me too much about buying new stuff, I bring up her spending on scrapbooking and picture developing costs.

I have stopped telling my wife how much any of this stuff costs. If I said $1000 for some headphones, she would not understand. I have asked her in the past to justify why a $1000 dollars for jewellery is ok, but $1000 for headphones is ridiculous. She has been very quiet on this subject since.

cheers

Mmmh, the fantastic world of people comparing their different utilities... Same old, same old. Some of my collegues are curious about my corda move for example, but they are overall adults, so don't care about what it cost. It borders more on the judging the hobby (music), rather than the money. They would applaude golf, sailing, or whatever sporty elitist crap that is the norm in my industry... Music has its sad stigma of solitude / you don't want to be with your friend kinda thing. Not good in my workplace where you have to be out there, friend with all (they would screen out introverts if they could)...

My wife is too practical to think it's a valid hobby, but she understands to some extent and she is probably the only reason why I have a bit of sense left and don't spend all my cash on headphones, heaphones amps and all. She's the only cure for head-fi spend .

She knows, however, that I will buy a great hi-fi system when we move. And she knows it will be expensive. And as many have pointed out, she'd never question Bose but would think buying a D1 from China is madness.

No, what she hates, is me on this forum. Now, listening to music is ok, but talking to strangers about headphones is just the 4th dimension to her.

i usually get a O_O and what?! when i say that my dt770 pros are 150. which isn't much at all. thinking of getting a D2000 and even that isn't quite up to hi-fi. not sure how i can convince my parents since not only are they practical, they're chinese...definitely don't like spending money on things that aren't needed.

Deiz stated: "I've got family members who know how much I've spent. They don't say much about it because they've learned that when they annoy me, and try to tell me right from wrong, I tend to intentionally keep out of touch with them for a few months at a time."

Way to go. Make 'em pay. I love it.

Not often. But it certainly happens once in a while...
Some people don't understand how I could spend $2000 on a pair of headphones. Oh well!
