Interesting results after using contact cleaner... - Page 2

I use Deoxit to clean, and it works wonders. Yes, I agree it helps for the product to dry before reconnecting things.

I've used ProGold. Then I went to Walker SST and the product absolutely dusts ProGold, no contest whatsoever. I note that I made my purchase of SST over 1.5 years ago and still have most of the bottle left, so don't let the price discourage you. ProGold, in my system with my gear, merely maintained the clean of Deoxit without making much of an improvement. SST, on the other hand, clearly made a marked improvement that my ex, my daughter, my friends (audiophile and normal ) all could hear and appreciate; for me, it was a night and day thing. An essential caveat with the Walker product is that you need to carefully follow directions when applying. Haven't tried the newest iteration of SST, but have a hankering to do it one of these days (darn audio hobby).

what do you use the walker sst on - power cords and ICs. i use mostly XLR connectors. could i use it on those as well.

QUESTION: do you apply the walker and then immediately plug in the cable/cord or do you let the sst dry before plugging it in.

i found this info about walker sst application.

Treating Interconnects
Use one of the supplied applicators to apply a very small amount of SST to the male end of the interconnect. Spread it thinly on about ½ or ¾ of the length of the center pin. Apply SST to the outside only of the female end in a thin even coat. Now, plug in your interconnect and listen. On XLR interconnects, apply to male pins only. DO NOT put the applicator into the RCA or you will short it out.

Treating Power Cords
Apply a thin even coat of SST to the male ends only. Cover both sides of the pins about half the length of the pins. On the I.E.C. male end at the component, do the same. Use only a very small amount. Do not over apply.

Treating Speaker Cables
Apply a thin even coat of SST to the contact area of the spades or bananas.

Treating Tubes
We experienced a big improvement when we applied SST to the pins of the tubes in our amplifiers. We suggest cleaning the pins with fine sandpaper in the direction on the pins. Clean with a contact cleaner, then apply a thin, even coat of SST to about 2/3 the length of the male pin.

i think i'm going to give this stuff a try.

Apply, then connect and play for about 8-10 hours, per the Walker site:

BREAK-IN PERIOD

E-SST/SST will immediately make a significant improvement. It will be even better after eight to ten hours of break-in time for the treated connectors.

Mapleshade also makes something like the SST product, called Silclear. Cheaper, and seems to work well. I haven't compared the two, but there is definitely a not so subtle improvement using these (the first "enahncer" I used was Tweak - remember that? Also made a pretty nice improvement in its day).

I seem to remember reading somewhere that a reviewer slightly preferred the Walker to the Mapleshade, but I think they both work well.

  • Mapleshade SilClear= $35
  • Walker SST = $75
  • Walker E-SST = $150

I buy that enhanced contacts will produce a better sound, but which one of the three to try? I wish someone(with disposable income ) could compare all three...

i'm thinking about going with the $75 Walker SST. i'm still a little wary about putting this stuff on my connectors, but the reviews are just phenomenal - and i love trying tweaks.

I tried the Mapleshade product a few years back, but didn't like it. Seemed to make the sound worse.
Don't know if the Walker product is similar or not.
It's a bitch to clean off if you don't like it. Got to use alcohol and lots of wiping & scrubbing.

At least Mapleshade has a 30 money back guarantee on all their products, I was able to return it.

Putting goo between connections is a good band-aid for brightness. 2 years ago I removed QuickSilver Contact Enhancer from only one fuse and it was so edgy it gave me a headache.

After I put Magix levitation feet and ERS Paper into my system I don't need any contact enhancers anymore.

I just use Isopropyl alcohol to clean the AC connectors. The first couple hours I get more sibilance but then it gets smoother.
