Interesting results after using contact cleaner...

I scrubbed down EVERYTHING with some Deoxit today. After two hours, I finished and plugged everything back in and... it sounded horrible. No bass, tinny as hell.

However, after a couple of hours it kicked back in and got MUCH better than before.

What's up with that?

i have always been interested in these contact enhancers and have read good things about them, but i have also read that they leave - or can leave - a permanent residue on the plug. that made me less interested.

maybe there was a residue that eventually evaporated and eliminated whatever disturbance it was causing. Just a guess. I wouldn't worry about it, but might be reluctant to use that same cleaner again.

oh wait.

maybe i am confusing what product you are using. you say cleaner. i am thinking about contact enhancers.

Maybe you didn't clean the cleaner off properly and it gradually evaporated. Also, sometimes cables can sound off when they are moved and take a while to settle back in when they are replugged

I have used a couple of enhancers. Progold seems to be the safest. I find it makes the system a bit treblish for the first day or so but then settles in to a generally good clear sound. I used this for years and can't say it seemed to cause any problems. You are going to want to reapply it once a year or more often though. But then if you didn't use any enhancer you might want to clean things that often. I believe it contains contact cleaner as well.

More recently I have beed using Silclear a silver-based enhancer on ic's and power cords. So far so good after about 6 months. But it definitely leaves its mark on the contacts, hopefully silver. So far it does great things to the sound, signal levels up, more punch, bass and prat. You need to try to use very small amounts, because it does get flaked off and then into places you where you don't want it.

The biggest disaster was the original Tweak, a contact enhancer which was especially good at boosting bass. After many months it turned to goo on your contacts, screwed up the sound and was a real hassle to get off.

So I can understand being cautious about these things.

Try ebay. No kidding. I bought the pen versions, DetoxIT and ProGold separately for about ~ $12 total. A bargain if you consider retail stores charging $15-$20 a piece.

Yes, I was also using ProGold on everything but the power cords... forgot to mention that.

Again, the end results were great, I'm just wondering what caused the first two hours to sound crappy.

Maybe the system had to "reset" itself electrically since all of the cables had been moved and cleaned. Or maybe the ProGold takes a couple of hours to "break in".

* pro-gold == good stuff
* the pen dispensers rock, baby! (except for small crevices)
* less is more! even less than that is better!
* spray it on a clean-lint-less cloth first

I get mine at fry's for about 12 bucks a pen.

I wonder how this would work on my PC. I remember I would sometimes have a system come into the shop where the jack on the soundcard seemed flakey; I'd have to jiggle the cord around to get proper sound. So I tried taking a Q-tip and inserting it into the jack a few times and the problem went away... and the Q-tip was surprisingly dirty. Now, I wonder if a Q-tip covered in ProGold...

It fixed my phone (not a cell phone, I hate those), which was shorting out left and right.

Clean the contacts on anything that uses a battery (flashlight, camera, etc...)
You'll get longer battery life.
