Found some nice close-up pics on the web so please enjoy:

The left is HP-D9 (50mm bass duct), the right is HP-V99 (60mm bass duct) both with amorphous diamond diaphragm

Hello

Good to see you over here

I remember seeing those 'pipes' on some cheap earphones once, but they were solid, presumably just for show... it'd be interesting to know if those Aiwa ones are hollow??

If I am not mistaken, aren't the Aiwas the best earbuds made, soundwise?

I remember having some of these when I was younger. I recall that I liked them a lot. Too bad they stopped making them.

Well I'm physics braindead so maybe somebody could answer why have the pipes... but I think Aiwa advertised them that the bass resonates better through a long hollow one-way pipe... and that their higher-end models have longer pipe lengths...

Oh I wish I can find that V99, looks so sweet! Supposely there's also a V9 which was their debut high-end earphone...

A brief observational point for you Krayzie...

The V99s are in picture 1 and 2, but the jack plugs are different between the two... does that mean that one (the one with the screw on connection) is better than the other?

If so, I think I should start looking out for those at pawn shops or something

Yeah I've noticed that too now that you've point it out Duncan... The second V99 picture's body also has different printing on it if you look closely... Not that it makes a difference I would think...

Even the Sony 484 had screw-on and non-screw-on variations, with the non-screw-on cord being the 888 cord with that nice cord insulation material on the outside...

Krayzie...

Looks like they could well've just been made on different production lines...

With the aid of Photoshop, I can now see that the model in picture one has JAPAN embossed on the Jack Plug, whereas, in picture 2... it has the word AIWA

Whichever way you look at it though, if these are the pinnacle of earbud listening, i'm gonna see if I can find myself a pair

Just a theory about the pipes, but maybe it's supposed to work as the sub like on some computer speakers where they have an opening to strengthen the lowest frequencies? Or it could just be a salestrick like "digital headphones"

These must be the "fake" pipes that you were referring to:

Aiwa HP-V14 entry level model integrated into a remote

Aiwa HP-V58 mid-end model with in-line volume control

Humm... marketing gimmick eh... could be... could be not... could be both! Think of the Nike Air Bubble or Shox... gimmick or technology?!?

i had the Aiwa HP-J9 once, they were crap! the older version, the HP-J7 were miles above it in comparison. i would even dare to say they were THE BEST earbuds in history EVER! even better than the Sony MDR-E484.

i miss my HP-J7. i had two pairs once, and i'd give na arm and a leg to have another pair. they're that good!

cheers.

I think the pipe is designed to act as an air tunnel to improve lower frequency, just like the one in that $1000 Bose cd-radio we often see on the late night advertisement.

I recall liking them not for the bass but for the very airy crisp sound it had. To date, I haven't found a earbud that had the same characteristics.

Krayzie,
Thanks for the nice pics. I really enjoy it. Did u get your E484 yet? Let me know how are you liking it. To me, E484 is the best earbuds ever made by Sony. I can't say about the Aiwa, but they sure look cool w/ those gold pipe!
