I am currently, as I write, listening to Gladiator on a Three Speaker $15 dollar ($5 per speaker, two sats, one 4.5 inch sub) Altec Lansings over an SB Live!.

It this heresy?

You can get a better set of speakers (Cambridge soundworks or even a much better set) and even when the sound will not be as good as, a good home, or portable setup (not even similar) at least you will get a little better sound, the SB live is not a very good sound card, but you are overkilling it with those speakers.... I have one SBLive in my computer. BTW, I do not use the computer for music at all, just to hear the beeps and "yahoo mail" etc...and my friends when chatting, (I never think on that, I do not consider computers intended for that purpose) but the sound is not so bad out of a simple basic Cambridge Soundworks (two satelites and a sub setup) when by mistake I'd played any music on it....

Honestly, computer speakers aren't that bad. You can't go too far wrong with single driver full-range speakers, even if the sub is crossed at 200 Hz. They can't handle all that much power, and the high frequency extension won't be all that, but you could do worse (e.g. a two-way speaker with a harsh metal tweeter and a bad crossover).

If I didn't have the money for a better system, I could live with a pair of Logitech's old 2.1 computer speakers, driven from a good Meta42 as a preamp.

Your sound card is a terrible source, of course. You should really consider a real CDP. My recommendation would be the new NAD T532; it sounds good and plays both DVDs and MP3s.

Czilla,

As others have stated here, it's torture enough that you own them, it would only put you out of your misery to stone you. Maybe now you'll be motivated to buy a decent pair of speakers and REALLY enjoy your movies and music.

I used to have a pair of those. That would be an improvement, for sure .

Umm, I'm watching Star Wars Episode II: The Clone War (gasp) with my DVD player hooked up to a 17" TV (double gasp) with mono sound coming from a 3 inch speaker (shriek) ...

With the red plug dangling because...its mono...

Should I be given the death penalty?

I wouldn't feel so all alone.

It is almost impossible to get stoned to death. Do you know how much weed you'd have to smoke?
