Am I insane

I was thinking about going with some V-Moda Vibes but decided to go with the Crossroads Mylarone X3's based on what most people were saying. I have to say I think the bass on these things is awful. If I turn the bass up on the EQ at all it starts to distort something awful.

When I play them through my iPod Nano the bass is nonexistent, however if I kick on bass boost then I get the distortion. I have a pair of $20 Koss IEM's that I think have better sound than the Crossroads.

I am not running it through an amp but was curious as to if that is what is needed. So far I haven't found a pair of IEMs that even come close to the quality of my Sennheiser PX100's.

Well, the Nano's (and possibly other ipod's) EQ is inherently broken. It clips when boosting anything (but bass will show up due to the large swing in the bass).

I would certainly not describe the bass of myX3's as non-existent - it has maybe mellowed out some over the months. But of course YMMV...

I've always used an amp with mine, so afraid I can't comment on how they are w/out.

Bass aside, you don't hear their detail & imaging? When I first listened to X3 I was hearing details of instrumentation, production so much more clearly than before. Etys they aint in terms of clarity, but very musical, warm & involving for the £££ IMHO.

ps Are you insane? Of course you are!
You're on Head Fi...

BTW, always research before buying, as to me it sounds like you didnt, you need to research iem's that suit the sound signiture you like.

It seems to me, that you bought them as people raved about them, and now dont think they are bassy enough for your liking. Maybe you should have got the XB's??

I didnt mean to be rude or anything, just my opinions, from my mind, straight into text.

Sorry about your disappointment. Is there any chance of an exchange for the XB version, with the metal housing?

I can say that the Future Sonics Atrio M5s are a bit like the PX100s in terms of "fun" listening, although I'd say that the M5s are more refined sounding (which is about right, as an in-ear costing twice what the PX100's cost ... you generally have to pay more to achieve in an in-ear what you can do in a less physically constrained headphone). The M5s make my unamped, un-EQ'd 2nd gen. iPod Nano sound fairly full and almost bassy -- quite an achievement, I'd say ...

I really like the PX100s and the M5s. That by itself doesn't guarantee that they sound "alike," of course, or that you will like both, but I take it that you're dreading the relatively "thin" sound of in-ears that many headphone users seem to experience. The M5s are somewhat like the PX100's, but cleaner/clearer sounding ... not bloated, and not too bright.

I've never heard the Senn canal phones -- any comments on whether they suit PX100 users?

I personally found my REAL CX300's bass to be bloated, with no highs, but found the ER6i's to be a bit lacking in warmth.....Im going to try the LiveWires!

My brain says theyll be too bassy, but my ears say they wont, as i have had CX300's and the opposite ER6i's, but no bassy, clear, depicted phones....

I wouldnt go as far as saying i love hugley bassy phones though.....As i hate lots of bass.

i dont think you need to worry about your pair, livewire T1. they have better bass than cx300 and better high than er6i, at least to me. i find them a little inferior to both se530 and triple fi, sound alone, but looking at the price tag, id say T1 is a real deal.

Nah I searched a lot I was looking for something that wasn't as bassy as the Koss ones (they sound a lot like the Sony MDR-EX71's to me) but that were somewhere in the middle of the Crossroads I got.....we got 2 pairs of crossroads one is the XB and one was the X3 so i will give the XB's a listen and see what I think.
yes i think the XBs would have been the choice for you, X3s aren't really a bassy phone, crossroads are fine phones for the price but you really have to be careful which model you get
post #10 of 12
nobody has asked what price he would like to limit to...so i will, what price you looking to spend? and yeh sounds like you would have prefered the vibes big time my friend.
I never found my 1st gen vibes lacking bass. guess you have newer model and the nature of iPod's signature makes this combo bassless

ipod EQs are hopeless, on anything less than a perfectly encoded song, the EQ will distort.

chance are, it will STILL distort if you had a perfect track. i just leave mine on normal.

if u want bass, the XB is not terribly bassy at all, however you do get with it more clarity than say, the Beyer DTX 50 which is quite muddy IMHO
