The 0404 PCI has the AK4396, which (from what I've read) definitely a good dac (in it's league) , and so is the 1212m's CS4398. (Many actually like the 0404's sound signature more, though most people say the cs4398 sounds more detailed and balanced.)

In general the 1212m has the upper hand.

But obviously some more expensive external dac's would sound better than both.

The emu's dacs are good but it's not AS good as it gets. (though it's pretty damn good)

Obviously high-end external dacs would be better than the ones built in in a 150$ card/100$ card. But they'd cost a lot more, and I actually don't know much about Dacs, just about the emus relative to themselves (since I'm getting the 0404usb I've been doing some research).

Both the 1212M and the 0404 USB are better solutions than the 0404 PCI. All of the cards have top-of-the-line DACs, so it would be a waste to run them to a separate DAC, unless it's in the $1k and up range--in that case, there's no point buying a new sound card.

0404 USB. More features, better implementation, and it's not directly connected to the motherboard. Several people have done direct comparisons, and all of them found the 0404 USB to sound superior.
