AKG K701 for gaming?

Does anyone have experience gaming with a set of AKG K701 cans? I currently use Koss Pro4AAT which are kinda heavy; had good results with my Koss Pro/480 which I am going to send back for new earcushions.

I was thinking I might get the 701's and wondered how they are for gaming. Considering they are open, might help to prevent the problem of wife tapping me on the shoulder and scaring the bejesus out of me

you'd probably need a headphone amplifier to get a decent performance out of the k701, gaming or otherwise. if you're looking for open headphones, grados and audio technicas might be worth looking at, given their low impedances

Depends if you find them comfortable. It might also sound a bit thin for explosions and whatnot. Amplification is a must.

I found the k701 to be awesome for gaming. The 3d positioning and detailing was real good, and the soundstage was humongous in games like bf2 where there were jets flying over my head. Like mentioned above, explosions won't have that impact that will your ears off, so some fun might be missed compared to cans like the dt770s. But overall, I had a satisfying experience with the k701 and gaming

Very amp Dependant. Gaming with my 701s & Bada12 was a very nice experience. With the DAC1 it was lifeless, cold, & boring..

But isn't the DAC1 one primarily a DAC with a crappy integrated headphone amp?

i didnt even know the benchmark DAC1 could be used just with headphones...

I use my mini3 with my K701 along with my sound card for gaming and it works very well. I don't think you'll have much trouble. The K701 does a good job of getting the overall direction and distance correct in my experience, so it makes a good gaming headphone. I don't know if they'll help with the isolation problem, though. Even though the K701 is open, I found them to be pretty immersive overall after breaking in, and so I still end up getting startled by visitors to my room ^-^

Honestly, if you use the K701 only for gaming, it's not worth it unless you don't care about the costs associated with it (the K701 itself, then an amp, a decent soundcard, etc..).. If you need headphones exclusively for gaming, look for cheaper headphones, but if you use it for music also and want serious sound, K701 is great for you..

The K701 has the soundstage and imaging capabilities desirable for gaming but it lacks the bass impact.. Perhaps Beyerdynamic headphones will suit you well..

Thanks for the replies everyone! If I get a 701, it will be mainly for music and an extra bonus if I like it for gaming. I'm thinking about getting a Meier Arietta first and seeing how I like my existing cans amplified before upgrading.

I think I see the slippery slope that this forum is leading me toward!

Personally I think slightly thin sounding headphones are best for gaming. The ones with 'normal' or excessive bass actually get tiresome to listen to after a while because game audio is so bass heavy, probably to compensate for crappy desktop speakers. Also the heavy bass will sometimes mask mid range audio and you have to turn the volume up to hear voices etc. in multi-player games. It can also interfere with positional cues. I sometimes use the X-Fi control panel to reduce bass in gaming mode when using Sennheisers.
