Mine were sufficiently high-end enough to justify re-cabling, and having compared my APS v2 D2000 with a new D5000, I think the mids and highs are as good, and the bass is actually better controlled with my D2000. They sound just like my APS re-cabled HD600/650 and have nice timbre and tone and detail, albeit a little slow like the HD600/650.
(To get a faster headphone you can to look at Ultrasone or Grado, and the Grado HF-1, RS-2 and RS-1 with APS cable are in my "do not sell list", as are my APS re-cabled Ultrasone Edition 9.
