Hooking up headphones to an Xbox 360?

I'm wanting to buy an Xbox 360, but I don't want to unless I can hook up my headphones to it so I get the audio and not just the voice chat like you do with the Xbox Live headset. Any way to do that?

I think the only way to do it would be through an external headphone amp or (yuck) through a receiver with a (probably crappy) headphone output.

I go the headphone amp route with mine and it's pretty awesome.

Oh, I'll be routing it through my HeadRoom Desktop Amp, I'm just wondering if it's possible and if so how to go about doing it.

The 360 has an optical output. I don't know if the HeadRoom Desktop has optical in, but you could use that if it does.

The optical out will let you hear all audio not just the voices. If you want to hear the voices too, just go to your personal settings and set the voices to "Speakers only".

The standard component output cable should have RCA outputs.

You can also purchase a relatively cheap VGA adapter made by ASID that includes optical out, which can be hooked up to a DAC, of course.

But you still need to have a microphone to chat. How is that going to work?

I'm using a Headroom Desktop for my TV/PC/video game area and it works great.

Put it around your neck and point the mic towards your mouth?

There are those PC ones that have a round base and then an adjustable mic... kind of looks like one of those bendable lamps.

And how exactly do you have it all hooked up to your TV/360? Do you have the built in DAC? Or is there a special way to hook it up? What am I going to need?

Yes, I have the DAC module. I have the High-Def Audio/Video cable from Microsoft which plugs into the back of the 360; this has an optical out which is run to the Headroom.

Your other option, if you don't have the DAC or the High-Def cable, is to just run some RCA interconnects to the Headroom.

It's very easy either way... you're basically just looking at interconnects.
