Kenwood HD60GD9 and HD60GD9EC Availability Update - Page 5

which is a single platter 1.8 inch 5mm drive, the question is now, if i can fit that same drive on a older kenwood.

found the drive, it costs 100 pounds vat included in the UK on a shop called span.com
i can post the direct link but it requires you to register, it also has the toshiba drives used on earlier versions of the kenwood, with the same limitation as before, toshiba only has up to 30gb in 5mm high,

ill keep on looking to see if i can find it cheaper or closer to home,

its cheaper in the states, going for about half the price mentioned above, but once it crosses the ocean, shipping applied, and the spanking you get when it crosses costums, if anyone knows a good shop in europe where 1.8" drives can be found, and please dont say alternate, i allready checked,
please, mention it.

If hiss is not a problem with the UM2, there is a lot of improvement over the HD30GB9.

What kind of HDD interface does it have? IDE? Some kind of ZIF?

I might consider one if I could drop a 160gig HDD into it.

I've been really busy with school and really broke since I got an iPhone but I will be willing to try this upgrade in a few weeks. I'm going to take apart the HD30GB9 and see if it looks relatively the same as Steph's pictures. Could be a worthwhile upgrade!

I don't know what connectors its got, but I know its the largest seagate do in this series!

both are marked as ZIF connectors, but i dont know if they are standart or propietary to each manufacturer,

the 20gb can be upgraded to 30 or 40gb using the same toshiba drive, but the 60GB uses a seagate drive, so basicly we need someone with a 60gb to take a picture of the connector and someone with a 20gb or 30gb to take a picture eof the connector, i have a 20gb coming from holland (i hope), i will check the drive connector as it arrives,

Steph, this player is quite an expencive piece of equipment, i suggest you dont violate the warranty or play with the insides of your player just to please others on the forum, i apologize if you opened your player on my suggestion, its yours, you paid for it, you enjoy it, im not saying you should´nt explore or check it out, but i ask that if you plan to do so, do so of your own initiative, i would not be able to accept the fact that you ruin a new player becuase of my curiosity,

in other words, please dont break your player to satify our curiosity, you paid for it, you enjoy it,

I was however baffled as to why, when turning on the supreme ex function the sound quality is not as good as using the EQ function. But having said that I used some of the pre loaded demo tracks which were encoded in the Kenwood lossless format and used the supreme ex function with that and it was amazing, and then I tried it with my PA2 and it was even better.
Were you able to tell the difference in hiss character with SupremeEX on and off? With my E500s (on my HD30GB9), the hiss without SupremeEX had a relatively high tone on top of a dirty white noise, and with SupremeEX, the white noise sounded less prominent and cleaner (less fluctuations). Do you hear any of this in your new GD9?

I'm going to have another look at the japanese manual to see if there is anything I can pick up about it!

Thanks
Steph
I am sure you know this already, but just in case you don't and assuming the 20GA/30GB/60GD has the same interface, the scroll keys work like a camera shutter, between focus and capture. When depressed to "focus," it should scroll slower then "capture".

There is no hiss what so ever when a track is not playing, and very little hiss when a track is playing before the music kicks in. Once music is playing I can't actually here any hiss (even at volumes as low as 5+) so am not able to comment on whether it is a different type when "supreme ex" is active. Also, I don't really listen to classical music, so there are not many gaps in the music that I listen to, for example when an orchestra stops playing, this could be another reason why I am not noticing the hiss, or it could be that im actually deaf lol! Hopefully someone else will get the HD60GD9 soon or the EC version so we will have a second opinion.

In conjuction with this I have never heard before any of the previous media keg series portables, therefore not knowing how this compares to the HD30GB9.

Sorry I could not be of more help.
Thanks
Steph

P.s

Thanks for the advice about the pressure of the quad pad (two levels), I just figured it out before you posted lol!! Makes life alot easier now, when scolling through a large number of artists.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any other accessory that acts like shures PTH (push to hear) mic.

I want something exactly the same but without the use of the AAA battery, and preferably something smaller. I have been searching for hours and cannot believe there is nothing on the market. There are lots for mobile phones which pic up calls, but thats not what I want.

Any suggestions would be great, because I just ordered some livewires and don't want to have to be pulling them out every two seconds when there is an announcement on the train. A simple switch to change from earphone to mic is what I want.

Thanks
Steph
the thing about sound traveling trough copper wires is that its an electric signal, therefore requires a power source, thats why the battery is there, you need to power the mic,
post #72 of 142
Steph, what about that review? any chance of you doing it soon?
Is the HDD 5mm or 9mm high? What kind of ZIF connector (number or pins) does it use?
Okay thanks for your findings Have you tried playing a track but leaving volume at 0 and observing the hiss? Does it fluctuate like "tss tss tss" during track changes or is it a clean "tsss---" hiss?
5mm, unsure about the connector yet,
