Minibox-E - Page 2

Thanks for the review....really got me noticing the minibox-e.....i'm just slightly worried by the charging timing....it's quite long for a battery life of 30+ hours in my opinion...

Wow... i never knew the MiniBox-E was actually this great... I guess it takes a while for amps to get noticed, since it was released like 3 months ago LOL too bad, the PK1 + MiniBox-E deal isn't transferable to present PK1 owners, or else I would've bought it in an instant LOL

I can't wait for the comparison between the Minibox-E and the new Headsix. I'll hold off purchasing until more people have received the Headsix. How does the Minibox compare to the Corda Move? I've read the Move and Headsix are supposed to be extremely similar.

Thanks, CK

i tried this a WHILE ago during the summer and it was a surprisingly good sounding portable. Could go head to head with the XP and the Supermacro (my 2 favorite portable amps)

but then again, I didnt really need a portable amp :P

I have a Minibox-E ordered, and I am wondering if the stated battery charge time of 10-15 hours is for real. This sounds incredibly long for charging a battery. I appreciate the info. -CK

Minibox-E Charging Question.

For my first portable amp, I purchased a Minibox-E to go out of my iPod Nano G2.

I already had the PK1s so I didn't get the combo deal. All I can say is this sounds fantastic. I compared it to using only the headphone out of the Nano with the PK1s. After adjusting for the volume difference, I definately noticed a substancial difference in quality. The iPod headphone out is rather mushy sounding. I never really liked the iPod headphone amp much. My Cowon U2 always sounded better. But now with line out of the iPod through the MiniBox-E, it just makes everything so clear sounding. The amp really brings out a lot more potential of the PK1s. Much more detail in bass, mids and treble. The soundstage is amazing with this combo too. I can't believe this whole system is portable!

Other points: The PtoS switch adds a bit more detail even thought the PK1s are already higher impedence than most portable headphones. The bass boost switch may be too much by itself, but when used with the PtoS switch it makes it sound more full.

For me, the SFOR toggle greatly affects the sound. I'm not entirely sure I like it but it does seem to open up the soundstage a bit. Is this a crossfeed? I can't quite understand what's it doing? Mrarroyo, do you have any comments on this toggle? I guess it could be fun for some music.

It seems to drive my HD600 and Beyer 880 2005 250ohm fine. I guess I don't listen that loud because 3 on the volume dial is too high for me through the minibox-E.

The only issues I have so far have nothing to do with the amp.

1. The 3.5mm to 3.5mm IC was nowhere to be found in the package. I wrote an e-mail to head-direct and hopefully this will be resolved shortly.

2. The little addon box is really cute - I'm sure I can find a use for it somewhere. The screws needed to be tightened a bit and there was a bit of cracking in the top cover. Not really worth mentioning.

But I really can't complain because I'm quite happy with the sound.

Lastly, I wanted to ask about the battery charging? When I plug in the charger, the red LED on the charger lights up. When charging, no LEDs light up on the MiniBox-E. How do I know when the MiniBox-E is fully charged?

Also, when using the MiniBox-E, is there any indicator for low battery? I believe it uses a Lithium and I'd rather not run it too low...

Mrarroyo, just wanted to thank you for writing up the review. It convinced me to finally get a portable amp and start with the MiniBox-E.

Thanks for the great news!

I have been inspired by the Minibox-E ever since it first appeared on ebay (sold by jasmine_chine if I remember correctly). Too bad I did not venture to buy for lack of proof (ahh...am I vile )

Just wondering though... could someone do a sound comparison of the Porta Corda MKIII, Minibox -E, and the Mini3? Like how the sound of each compares to each other? THANKS!

Do a search for the 31 portable amp review and you will see the comparison. Basically both the Mini^3 and MiniBox-E beat the Porta Corda MkIII (IMO).

mrarroyo, Have you noticed how long it takes to charge the Minibox-E? Is there a way to tell it is charged completely? Thanks, CK

Wow... it is in the review!! I'm sorry, I missed it last time I read it. Do you think it's worth selling the Porta Corda to get a Minibox-E for my PK1s then?

For what is is worth I have been using a MinyBox-E for about four months now and have about two hundred hours on it. It was my first portable headphone amp and seemed to be a very cost effective way to boost the output of a Cowon D2 into my Grado SR125s.

Not expecting that much from it, I found however that the MiniBox lost very little to my only other head amp which is a mains driven Graham Slee Solo 2007 (again now with about two hundred hours on it). So I am naturally very happy to learn that respected ‘big guns’ are looking with favour on what was to me a fairly random newbie speculation.

Not having much else to do yesterday afternoon, I did some comparisons between these two amps using a pair of Sennheiser HD650s, and the differences seemed very slight indeed. I have though to own up that I am using a pair of Burr Brown OPA604s in place of the standard AD8610A op-amps, as they seem to be slightly ‘softer’ sounding and rather better to my taste. I mostly listen to mainstream jazz or classical music, so the reproduction of live instruments and acoustics is important, I also go to concerts fairly often so am familiar with live music.

The Slee / HD650 combination is I believe quite well though of, so to find that the MiniBox-E / HD650 combination sounding, to these admittly middle aged ears, virtually identical is rather a mixed result as the Slee is perhaps ten times the size and six times the price! Perhaps depth and bite of bass is not as good with the MiniBox, and the Solo seems smoother and might have a slightly deeper sound stage, but there again stage width might be a touch wider with the MiniBox. They both have great dynamics on piano and percussion, and both reproduce any obvious recorded problems. I am reminded of the differences between before and after monitoring on a properly set up professional tape recorder (I am that old) in that the sound is basically the same. A remarkable achievement for a small pocketable amp that can go quite loud enough into the Grados or the Sennheisers. Of course the Slee is audibly better and sweeter sounding, but not by as much as I would have hoped for!

Yes the fifteen hour charge time is about right, can’t have everything at this price.

MiniBox-E Full Charge?

Anyone that owns a MiniBox-E...

How do you know when the MiniBox-E is fully charged? Does the red light on the charger ever go out?
