Somehow i think they do sound different, but i'm really not sure. Maybe you should check it so we would finally know the truth? It's demo-time!
Okay, seriously, of course those two cans sound different, DT-880 is Neutral and "soft", but still amazing with details. DT-990 is bassier, and the highs are a bit too harsh and not so detailed as in DT-880.

My question is not lacking sense! Isn't the DT 990's the Beyerdynamic's top of the line?
Am I wrong?

I guess accro compared DT990's instead of DT990Pro's which are more neutral than "smiled" DT990's. Yes DT880's and DT990Pro's sound different. My friend says DT880's are to thin and light in the sound while he enjoys DT990Pro's. It's a matter of preference, anyway.

They sound very different. But ofc not as different as beyerdynamic vs another brand.

Dt990 has got more bass, but this does not mean that dt880 has little bass. For me, the bass of dt880 is excellent.

Dt990 has more hights, at least the '05 version of it.

To me, dt880 wins. It sound more natural. I get the transparent feeling way more often with dt880 than with dt990. Because of this, I think that dt880 is more allround than dt990, if the bass is enough for you.

Okay, I see that you have the two models. What model do you use the most?

The 880s are better if you only have one pair of headphones. The 990s are good for some things but can be unbearably bright at times.

I tend to use dt880 the most. I prefer it on nearly every recording. The vocals are much better than with dt990. The dt990 can be harsh sometimes, and the hights can be too much on some recordings. It's not a bad headphonet though. When dt990 was the only phone I had, I loved it. Now I just love dt880 more. dt880 was how I thought the dt990 would be.

The only reason I keep dt990 around is that I think that it is better for gaming, and that it really has got synergy with the album Mastodon - Leviathan.

dt880 is a much easier listen, and I find it to be a "fun" listen enough.

EDIT: I just had to try dt990 again. It really is a fun headphone. Some albums feels really powerful with the large soundstage and powerful bass.

EDIT2: I had a listen too Mastodon - Iron Tusk. I can't imagine any headphone suit this song better than dt990. It is really really hard and powerful. On dt880 it is a little bit too lean compared to dt990. Was the same way with sennheiser and Mastodon, just didnt feel right.

DT880's have lean bass, neutral mids, and a treble spike.

DT990's have mounds of bass, more recessed mids, and the treble spike is the same as on the DT880's except twice as intense (lots more sizzle).

Could anyone start talking about DT990Pro's instead of DT990's?

Oh, I'm sorry, i just totally ignored that "PRO" there. I haven't even listened DT990 PRO, so it's hard to say. DT880, -03 or -05, is can-to-have if you're listening with only one pair of cans.

I find that I prefer the '03 version of the dt990, to the '05 version. Which I know runs contrary to the popular concensus here.

When comparing the two I found that the '03's gave a much more exciting presentation, less linear. The '05 versions were much more neutral and balanced, to my mind much more boring. So if you are like me, and want excitment in your listening experience you might consider the '03 versions, you will likely be able to get them at a great price as most rush to pick up the the '05 models. If you seek a "neutral and balanced" sound is what you seek, the '05's are the ones you should on the hunt for.
