160GB drive in 5G/5.5G iPod - Page 3

I'm pretty tempted to try - i just hope someone tries it (for the betterment of the community) before I ran out of space and decide trying it myself :P

I just successfully transplanted a Samsung HS122JB (120GB ZIF connector drive) into my 5.5G iPod 80GB. It's a direct swap, fits and works perfectly. The only "mod" I had to make was that the plastic "drive holder" piece had to be put in backwards.

The Samsung drive is noticeably quieter than the original Toshiba, and uses slightly less battery power too. It also has 8MB cache instead of the Toshiba's 2MB, and the i/o performance while syncing songs "seems" faster. Of course, "fast" is relative here, as it is still painfully slow in disk mode, and re-populating all my music took a l-o-n-g time.

P.S. I run rockbox on this iPod so I could avoid iTunes and be able to play FLAC and Ogg Vorbis files.

Interesting, it sounds like it is similar to the compact flash card mod.(Mostly popular in the ipod mini) Painfully slow when it comes to song transfers but the performance over all is improved including battery life.

Congrats. Where did you buy the drive from? And how much did you pay if you don't mind my asking.

My iMod is waiting patiently for a bigger drive.

I got mine from National Toner Warehouse for $191. Unfortunately they are now out of stock on this item. Interestingly, no matter which shipping option you choose (e.g., ground vs. next day air), the cost was the same at $9.

Search google and I'm sure you'll find another vendor with stock.

The iPod 5.5G uses a 1.8" IDE (ATA-100) interface drive with a tiny ZIF40 connector. You'll need a IDE-to-USB converter to make this work. However, such converters with a ZIF40 connector seem hard to find, so you may need an additional ZIF40 adapter to whatever connector style that the USB converter uses.

Also, I am not aware of any general purpose 1.8" drive enclosure, so you'll have to make some sort of mount for the drive to fit it into a 2.5" drive enclosure of something similar.

i just installed hs122jb samsung 120 gig hard drive in my 5.5 gen imod
along with higher capacity 850mah battery

Any way Toshiba's new 160GB drive, which uses a micro Sata connector, can be put into a iPod 5.5G via some sort of micro sata to zif converter?

So given today's disappointed iPod announcement I am trying to decide between a 160GB 6G iPod or getting a 5.5G iMod and upgrading the hard disk. I would need at least 160GB, so I am wondering if the Toshiba 160GB disk mentioned above can be used. (There is now even a Toshiba PATA 240GB drive (MK1231GAL 1.8-inch Hard Disk Drive)
