160GB drive in 5G/5.5G iPod

All,

I finally got around to opening my 160GB iPod Classic, as I wanted to try swapping the drive with my 80GB 5.5G iMod.

Unfortunately, the 160GB drive is totally different than the 80GB drive. The 160GB drive is made by Samsung and uses a different type of zif connector (only 18 contacts).

The 80GB drive in the iPod Classic, as well as the 80GB drive in the 5.5G units is a Toshiba drive and uses a different type of zif connector (with more contacts, different pin outs, and different cable).

There will be no way of installing the 160GB drive in the 5G/5.5G units.

Yes... ZIF = "zero insertion force" and are available in many different kinds of cables and connectors.

What is strange is that I've read that the 160GB Classic uses a
Toshiba MK1626GCB drive. What is this Samsung drive doing in my Classic?

Maybe the Toshiba 160GB drive can be swapped with the 80GB Toshiba drive (MK8022GAA)?

Apple really put in the effort to make this unit a PITA to work with!

Yes, but that is the 80GB model... not the 160GB.

Well this sucks. First the new 6G Classic doesn't use the Wolfson DAC. Now we find out that they didn't even use a similar drive to allow for drive swapping. ughhhhh.... Thanks, Vinnie....at least we all now know.
Man, if someone wanted to go into making custom hard drive connector adapters they could do quite nicely from all of us here....hmmm how about a connector transplant....

Have any of you ipod modders heard of anyone using one of the San Disk SSD units yet. I know they're super $$$ right now but the battery drain and search would be so much better.

This is a real bummer. I would have never thought Apple would have changed two key components. Sucks for us head-fiers, but I can't say I fault Apple for making changes. It does add irony to the name "classic", however.

Thanks Vinnie for going to the trouble and for posting this here. It's a bummer but I'm sure the Toshiba MK1626GCB will be available some day. That would work, right?

^ I don't think so. If you search the product numbers the 160GB drives are CE-ATA drives while the 80GB drives are PATA. Different type drives.

Thats a bummer. Might have to settle for the 120GB drive.
