more or less arbitrary than people listing the breakdown of their personal setups?

That depends on what you're looking for.

Personally I think it's interesting to look at the breakdown of different individuals amp to source ratios; it's interesting to see where people put their money. You see interesting things here on Head-Fi, like $5,000 amps plugged into the $1000 DAC1, or $5,000 CD players plugged into the $750 GS-1.

You can find examples of systems with opposite ratios, which arguably sound just as good. That's why I think it's impossible to come up with a hard and fast rule that either your amp or your DAC should be more expensive, and by a factor of X.

Anyway, I wasn't slamming your post, I was just saying that I don't think it's possible for that question to be answered with any kind of consensus.

about 2:1

transports are part of the source right?

Portable: 3:2
Home: 6:7

Same amp for both.

Rough estimates:
Pass Clone: 20% (for K1000)
Woo2: 50% (to drive power amp, and possibly other headphones)
Pandora DAC: 30%

Currently 1:1 but that'll change when the iMod arrives.

Amp : Source

2 : 1

D1, I guess 1:1 but when using my home dac, the Elaborate Dac, it is like source 10 to to amp 1.

Amp: $250 including shipping for Little Dot III

Source: $40 including shipping for Sony scd 775 with sacdmods.com mods.

Originally my source would have cost around $800, but I got mine from a sketchy auction house on ebay and really lucked out.

Now for a less useful (but perhaps more amusing) question: what is your amp to source to interconnect cost?

i always use 50/50. but if it needs adjusting i always change the source before the amp.
