amp for subwoofer

Currently I'm using the Cambridge Soundworks DTT 2500 speakers with my ONKYO receiver as I'm on a budget and they seem to be doing fine. Problem is the subwoofer that came with this speaker set is non-powered so it won't work with this receiver unless I get an amp for it. What I'm wondering is is it worth it to get an amp just to power the subwoofer or should I get a new subwoofer? What are the benefits and cons of each, if any?

Wow. This requires more than a short answer. Is there a market for this particular sub and would you recoup an acceptable amount of money if you sell it? I, myself have always preferred powered subs. You can usually get a very good deal on a DIY model. If you're not sure of your building skills, you can buy a box with cutouts for the speaker and amp. Plus it's fun and you have a sense of accomplishment when finished.

I'm sure there are many other posters here more knowledgable about this than I. But looking around and trying different options is more than half the fun. Good luck!

A headamp to power a sub?? Might I suggest you post this in the wire and speaker forum. You will probably get more replys.

Depends on your budget. You could get a sub amp plate for pretty cheaply on the Bay, though. Otherwise semi-respectable powered subs start at around $300 and go up to the stratosphere from there.

if you want a cheap active subwoofer that's very capable musically i'd go with a REL Q100E, or any REL you can get for your dough

i've had a few now and a Q200e, superb!

Not 100% sure, but wouldnt the T-amp solve this problem at around 40 bucks?

REL subs are excellent. I've owned the Stadium III and Stentor III and both were out of this world.

So was their price.

But the less expensive models are very good too.

yup i couldn't afford to buy a stadium or likes of their higher end subs so settled with Q100's and 200's, set-up properly and you really can't complain.. but your neighbours can :/

q100's can be bought for 100 uk pounds so very cheap.

I'd throw my Harman Kardon PA2400 on it - 340W RMS with up to 1200W peaks (±100 amps instantaneous current), when bridged mono - but those are pretty rare. You won't be finding one for the price I paid, either.

The PA2200 (the 2400's little brother) would do a decent job too. Pretty much any decent separate amp could probably do a credible job; see what you can turn up on Ebay or through local listings.

Or just replace the thing... which would probably be easier.

I haven't checked Hsu prices lately but they're probably reasonable.

If I remember correctly, parts express used to carry some good sub amps.

Nope. 6 watts into 8 ohm is not nearly enough for a sub.

Sorry I didn't make mention of this earlier, but I was looking to spend as little as possible with what I have now. I doubt there's a market for this particular sub as it was bundled as a package with the speakers. I looked on Parts Express for subwoofer amps and came across http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=300-782

That would work well with my current setup, but I'm not sure how to actually go about using this or if it's even what I need. The subwoofer I have now only has a positive/negative terminals with a cable that terminates with an RCA jack. How would I retrofit this setup with this amp?

The RCA terminated jack is designed to be used with the Cambridge Soundworks receiver.

So I'm SOL with this subwoofer and my ONKYO receiver?
