Best lossy codec?

post #1 of 11

I am looking for the best lossy codec to use on my ipod. I use rockbox so there is a fair choice.

I'm going away for 4 months so I want to cram as much music as possible on, whereas I usually cycle my flac files every week or so.

I remember seeing a thread on here a while back which contained a fairly thorough graphical representation of all the lossy codecs (they were wierd lookin colourful graphs), but i've searched and failed to find it, so help in locating it would be appreciated.

Since you're using Rockbox, MP3 encoded with LAME at -V0 would probably be the best choice. going full out at 320kbps wouldn't be a bad idea if you have the space.

Thanks for the quick response!

I thought that LAME would be recommended

How does OGG compare

In my experience, encoding in Ogg gives better sound and bass quality than mp3 for the same bitrate.

I currently encode from Flac to Ogg level 8 - 256k
I use Easy CD-DA Extractor as software.

I use LAME too (V0)...does that make me lame?

ABX or shenanigans.

Probably Musepack (MPC) or OGG. I use Musepack, personally.

The graphical representation, in my opinion, is not a good way to compare the lossy codecs, because if I remember right they compare the frequencies of the lossy codecs to that of the original. But all lossy codecs are psychoacoustical in nature. That means the only way to test them is through hearing (preferably with volume matched ABX or the like so you can get psychological effects out of the way).

These lossy codecs are pretty much even when it comes to sound quality (highest quality encoder application):
* MP3 (LAME 3.97)
* AAC (iTunes)
* Ogg Vorbis (aoTuV beta 5)

thanks

I'll check out the recommended codecs.

I appreciate that graphical representation isn't the way to go with audio really, but it may help to pick off the weaker codecs

-V 2, -V 0, or 320cbr with LAME 3.97

IMO, most new codecs are better optimized for lower bitrates. OGG does wonders at low bitrates, but higher bitrates don't really do anything better IMO (rather than limit your compatibility)
