IEM's good for non real world environment - Page 2

Well after my first day of giving my Shure SE110's more of a try - I'm starting to enjoy them more. ( for sheer music listening - no active movement ). After more comparisons the NR is superior to my headphones.

The sound quality is much better than my Headphones, I can only imagine if it would be worth spending another 150 to move up to the SE310's.... And if the difference would be only slight ?

My ears however do get a bit itchy after a couple hours of use.

The group buy is for the PK3, which is the entry level earbud from Yuin. I've not heard them so I can't answer for their quality. I can only say I've been very happy with my PK1s. The PK3s, through this group buy ending Oct 1, are only $25, so might be worth trying out if you want to try an earbud.

If you're going to move up the Shure line, I say save some pennies and skip the 210s and 310s. I prefer the 420s and 530s by quite a bit, and wouldn't feel the need to upgrade if I settled on either. Another excellent iem option is the Ety ER4P. Amazing sound for under $200 and doesn't require an amp. There are a lot more choices in iem land that I've personally not heard, but I can speak for those mentioned.

Thanks Boo,

Sound advice.

Would you recommend and full size headphones closed & open that would be as good as the 420/530 or preferably better ?

Maybe think about a pair of custom in-ear monitors? Like the Livewires?

Hah! Look at my profile. The headphones I've chosen to keep I love, the ones I've sold, I liked but not enough.

There are a lot of wonderful full-sized headphones out there, mostly open, but many of the best, even at moderate prices require an amp and a decent source to allow them to shine. I'm going to stay away from recommendations right now. Read up a bit. Decide a budget for yourself and then maybe start a thread letting us know about your music tastes, etc.

Where do you live? The best way to learn about what you like is listening for yourself. There are lots of meets where head-fiers bring their gear and share. Check out the meet forum here, both for upcoming meets and the meet impressions threads of past meets. I often get the best recommendations just reading others' impressions of gear heard at meets. We're having the International meet in South Florida (CanJam '08) in May where I can promise nearly every headphone you'd ever want to hear will be present.

CBS, what kind of tips are you using with the Shures? With my E2c, I've found that the foam tips barely make any noise while I'm walking, whereas the black flex tips introduce a very noticeable "thump" every time I take a step. If you haven't tried them out already, it might be worth a shot to see if going to the foam tips will solve the problem of hearing your footsteps.

They won't do anything about the noises caused by chewing, though - that's just inevitable.

Hi Boo, i'm from Vancouver, BC Canada

I'll look into meets in that area... would be much better to hear in person.

TRIPPY: i'M USING the black foamies (much better seal than the soft flex). they still make that thump - the sound wave must get carried through my entire body regardless of isolation material... although an open ear bud design would not lock in that thump.

I'm thinking about going to an audiologist and see if they can make me a custom ear mold for my inexpensive 110's.... which Im Shure.... would work when I upgrade to a 530 etc. As long as the tube is the same diameter.

do foamies for the 110's fit the 420/530's ?

In fact, I think you are right about this, now I realise why the other day I noticed heavy foot sounds. I never had problems with footsteps whilst using the foam tips, but I switched to the black flex ones, and I noticed the thumping on the street. I thought I was just walking extra fast haha, but now I see that it was those tips (because I used the foam ones many times, and never noticed anything).
