IEM's good for non real world environment

Hello, this is my first post and venture into portable Hifi.

I travel rather extensively and have been generally pleased with my Panasonic noise reducing headphones. I compared them to the Sony equivalent before purchasing, and found the active noise reduction equal, except the Panos were more comfortable on my noggon. However... The Panos have terrible sound when the NR is turned off. (Perhaps most NR cans do ??? ) They sound muffled, distant, underwater basically. With a flip of a switch the sound great... well great to me, as I have yet to hear anything better. I find this a downside, as there are times when I want to use my cans in a quiet controlled environment.

Today I went to Best Buy and bought a pair of Shure SE110's as the sound isolation feature was intriguing.

I have been comparing my Pano's with the Shure's to see which method seems superior.

Noise Reduction :: about the same / need more real world tests though... I'm leaning slightly to the Shures.

Sound Quality
:: Pretty similar, although I am leaning to the Pano's when the NR is turned on... as long as music is playing you really can't hear the white noise.

Comfort :: The Pano's win here. Even though the Shures were not uncomfortable or painfull to wear, anything jammed in my ear other than wax feels foreign.

Portability
:: Shure's - their earphones !!

MAJOR CONS

I thought the Shures would be another alternative to sound isolation, however after going for a normal walk with them my mind quickly changed. IN EAR PHONES of any calibar are only suited to NON MOVEMENT activity.... I could hear my footsteps in my ears, any breathing, and if I were to be chewing gum than yes, that too would be amplified... It seems to me that IEM's are great as long as you don't do anything....This kind of defeats the whole purpose of taking my music with me....

I am considering taking them back and putting the 100 bucks towards another ipod etc. Or a better sounding pair of normal closed headphones.... OR perhaps another pair of better sounding active NR's.

Any suggestions ? Cheers

Etymotic's ER6i's have a shirt clip that helps reduce the cord noise. I imagine other IEM's have something similar. That doesn't help with the chewing/toe tapping noise though.

I'm guessing you are right by the nature of IEM's desgin Mailler.

Does anyone have experience with a higher end closed headphone that could compare it's passive NR effectiveness to an active NR headphone ?

Did you wear your SE110 over the ears ?

wish that would make a difference but it does not.

Try walking on your heels while plugging your ears with your fingers.

Now walk without plugging your ears.

You can not hear your foot steps at all with the latter.

Wearing IEM over the ear can prevent cord from dangling which produces annoying microphonics effect.

Also I am guessing you took the walk in some parks or quite neighborhoods since you would barely notice the sound of your step in noisy street environment.

I had similar problems when I first wore IEM but I've adapted them and can enjoy them everywhere I go

the sound of the step sounds like it is coming from within... I'm guessing it has to do with the physics of sound being conducted through your body, and getting trapped.

Do the above experiment and you will see what I mean.

Would something like a Senn HD280 Pro be as good as a headphone with active nR ?

fairly quite yes... but IEM's in the gym would be painfull... I'm thinking a pair of JVC gummies for 9 bucks would be as good.

I tried them in a dept. store too, and I could easily hear my amplified footsteps.

CBS, welcome to head-fi!

Is isolation your first priority, or are you just looking for a good portable solution? If the latter, I recommend Yuin PK1 earbuds if willing to go with an amp, or PK2s if ampless. The sound quality is excellent for an earbud, and they fold up tiny and can be dropped in a pocket. I think there's even a group buy going on now for their entry-level buds, the PK3, for $25.

Hi Boomana,

I'm beginning to think that it is near difficult to create an end all be all headphone solution.

Isolation is important as I travel on an airplane alot.
SQ is important too
Comfort
ANd the ability to be used stationary or in motion with no noticeable difference.

My over the ear Panasonic NR head phones do not have any of the problems that these IEMS have.... but I am looking to improve the SQ.

Perhaps I need phones for all the different seasons...

yup , I know what you mean and has experienced myself. It's disturbing in quite place but negligible in others. If you want , you can try wearing them in downtown and see what I mean.

As for HD280 Pro, I've never heard them but generally, those closed headphones won't isolate as much as IEMs and active NR headphones.

Uh oh. And now and I can add the rest of the head-fi traditional greeting: Sorry about your wallet.

Take a look at my or most anybody's profile here and you'll see we reached the same conclusion. Then you have to factor in for different tastes, genres, and well, the joy of listening to a new great headphone for the first time, hearing things you never heard before from the same music you've listened to hundred of times.

Give us a purpose (travel, gym, home, work), a budget, and the type of music you like best. We'll happily help you spend your money, but you won't regret it. For now, are you looking for something you can walk around with, or looking for good sq with isolation. Since you don't like iems for walking around town, you'll not find both in same.

Now how did I anticipate a greeting colored with warnings and apologies...

Cheers boomana!

I am generally happy with my Panasonic RP HC500 's, which are as good or better than the Bose line of NR Cans... according to reviews....

My only minor regret, the impulse purchase I made at an airport ($200) ... Now selling for half the price..anyhoo...

Well now I have the Shure SE 110's IEM's which replaced the E2c's I think... I'll have to wait and give a report as to whether my Pano's or the Shure's are better for the airplane... Should have a flight in about two weeks...

1> Purpose:: travel
My Pano's are rated at 22db of NR ... are there any headphones with better SQ and NR ( no IEMs - have one allready )

2> Purpose:: gym / walking around town...
Well you have allready recommended the PK1's ... so I'll have to look into those. Where is this group buy ?

Budget::
haven't decided yet.

Music:: World Music, Buddah Bar, Jesse Cook, Santana, Sting, Mozart, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd (great gig in the sky) , Metallica - No Leaf Clover, Bourbon tabernacle Choir, KAOS, 70's, 80's... Vocals. Soul, Motown.

Perhaps I have what I need right now, but the evil dollar is telling me otherwise.... spend spend spend....
