Ive got Moving Pictures and 2112 and love them both.
MV is a staple for me though-huge influence on me when I was growing up.
I like the extended, more progressive songs with killer guitar/drum solos.
I guess more in line with MV than 2112.

How's about Permanent Waves. It came out right before Moving Pictures if I remember correctly.

I would grab Permanent Waves, Fly by night, A Farewell for Kings, and Hemispheres.

Hemispheres and Farewell to Kings should be next.

I've seen them 26 times since John Rutsy was on the drum kit on the debut album. Late 70's 80's was their most creative period, no question.

personally, when i seek out material for a band, i like to start at the beginning.

debut albums often give me insight into the core qualities of the musicians before big name engineers, producers, record labels, and especially the "sell out" factor take over.

rush's self-titled debut remains my favorite album of theirs.

You'll probably end up owning them all. Signals is a good next move and I think Power Windows is underrated and divided among fans.

I prefer Farewell to Kings over Hemispheres, but I have all their albums and like them all. Yes, even stuff like Hold Your Fire...

Wow - thanks for the question. I got into Rush more recently, but I also have only the same two albums and wanted to know where to go next. Thanks for all the replies, guys.

26 times! Wow! I feel like a complete amateur after only seeing them twice!
I agree, the older stuff is the best. I also have to agree with many others here, since you already have Permanent Waves I would also recommend getting A Farewell To Kings and Hemispheres next.

FYI - If you're a fan of Progressive Rock bands like Rush and Pink Floyd, check out Porcupine Tree. I only discovered PT recently but am really enjoying them.

Permanent Waves, Signals, Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres

I'm sure I'm going to catch hell for this from head-fi members but I strongly recommend you check out their 80's stuff. In my opinion, those are usually the best Rush albums.

I've got a pretty good collection of their albums spanning their career but by far my favorites are from the 80's. If you don't have any of the 80's ablums, the best one to start with is their live album called "A Show of Hands".

Permanent Waves, Signals, Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres are all Rush must have albums.

I personally prefer the live perforamances. Exit Stage Left and Rush in Rio are a couple worth checking out. I'm not overly impressed by later releases such as Test for Echo, Vapor Trails or Snakes and Arrows.

Rush was excellent to 2112, from that point on I would consider them pretty good. My favourite album is their 1st though.
