Portable Amp for Denon D2000

Hey Head-fi,

Could the D2000 owners please recomend me a good portable amp for D2000, I know they are only 25 Ohms but I've read that they sound better amped. I've used the search tool but all I find is what music they are good with and how they compare to other headphones (K701, HD650,....etc.).

Also would the tomahawk be able to drive the D2000 to their full potential or should I get a hornet.

Reason: I visited my uncle over the weekend and a buddy of his gave him the Denon D2000 as a birthday gift (I wish I had friends like that) and I got to try them out and they sound good out of my Ipod but I have a feeling that they can sound even better. So now I really want to purchase a pair but I would like to know what portable amp I need.

Thanks in Advance,

Izzy

The only portable amps I've tried with the D2000 are the Hornet and Tomahawk, and honestly, I couldn't really tell the difference between the two. The Tomahawk sounded fantastic with the D2000's to my ears. I tried specifically to try and sense a difference in the bass response, but the Tomahawk belted it out about the same as the Hornet.

Taking the size and battery life into account, I'd say you'd do well getting the Tomahawk to pair with the D2000's -- especially if you'd use it with IEMs or other low impedance phones.

I highly recommend the Tomahawk. It has excellent battery life and sounds pretty much identical to the Hornet...especially when the D2000's aren't that hard to drive.

Get yourself a Go-Vibe V5 from someone that has one used. Out of my amps, it is the best one for use with Denon D5000. It has the LM6171 opamps, which match perfectly with the Denons. I think this is why people are saying the Meier Corda Opera is so perfect with them, too. It uses the same opamps.

I use the HeadRoom Micro Amp and I think it is a great match for the Denons.

Excellent, I was really hoping that I could use the tomahawk because it would save me 80 dollars that I can spend somewhere else like a dock.

Thanks alot guys,

I can't wait to get this now..... Come onnnnn payday come onnnnn pay day!!

go ahead and take one for the team - order a xin reference!

I use a Supermicro IV with mine but I second the Xin Reference. Unfortunately Xin is still tweaking so it might be a long wait so in the mean time a Tomahawk would be a good choice.

I have the D5000s, which I hear is virtually the same sound as the D2000s, and sometimes listen to them with a Hornet (using a line out cable). It's a tight, clean sound. The bass is PUNCHY.

Don't say things like that because I'm kinda on the fence but I think I'll save those extra $80 if the difference won't be that much once the Tomahawk is fully burned in.

You want the most neutral amp you can find. AD opamps tend to make the presentation have too much bass (since they are already a bassy headphone) and a forward midrange. LM opamps keep a nice neutral presence with a good soundstage and crisp highs. (See my review above)

Il second the XIN REFRENCE,you could also try the PR II or the new diablo. They suppose dot be good as well.

p.s--why is that some of the best amp makers take eons to dleiver(xin, larocco)

Tomahawk drives them nicely.

My D2000 with the AMB mini3 - really great to my ears! And you won't find better bang for the buck! You can find the mini3 for around $90-110.
