So take qll this with a heaping big grain of salt.
I think you're largely correct. I'm also using the E500s and while I do think the Classic sounds better through the line out and into my SuperMacro IV, it's not a huge difference. With the SuperMacro the difference is that it manages to drive the E500s with more authority and tightens the bass up a little more. That is largely what I configured my SuperMacro to do though so it makes sense it can beat the headphone out in that regard. I'd say it's in that "last %5" area of improvement.

With full size headphones the difference is more obvious though and the amp seems to have a greater effect in my experience but the overall sound signature remains similar.

The Shuffle sounds like crap when it's amped; everything is disjointed. I don't if or to what degree this is manifested in the Classic.

I'm not going to come out with a statement that says the 6g is amazing as far as SQ, I just opened mine. IMO I preferred the Zune SQ over the iPod line. I actually found the Zune was more "fun" and iPod more "neutral" with worse EQ settings.

I'm on my 3rd 2nd gen. No hiss at all.

What low impedance IEM might you be using to test? Maybe the Shure E2's lower sensitivity prevents it from registering.

LOL, I wish it were as easy as that.

The difference reminds me (in a very superficial way) the so-called differences between (the so-called "british-sounding" and "american-sounding" speakers. Or what Harry Pearson used to call Yin vs. Yang sound. Or...

Neither were objectively better or worse than the other. It really comes down to listener's personal experience, the software, the source, etc. And as one gains experience, one's perceptions can change. The "stuff" teaches you, if you know what I mean.

For example, to an inexperienced (but involved) listener, an up-front highly colored presentation may sound incredible. But, given time and experience, the listener may find that all recordings tend to have the same up-front, colored presentation, but different equipment may allow stuff like inner-detail, timber, etc to present themselves more accurately.

Many times very good stuff can initially sound rather lackluster. But, as your ears/brain adapt, you perceive much much more. (Your eyes take about 20 minutes to adapt to low light conditions. Your ears also adapt.) So, while warming up the equipment, make sure you warm yourself up too!

In my case, the weak link is definately the diy LOD. I just ordered an ALO LOD (jumbo cyro). We'll see what happens in a few days.
