get lower quality speakers/headphones that should solve that issue

It also depends on your encoding. A 128 kbps with lame sounds actually pretty good, especially with computer speakers or with a headphone connected to the soundcard directly with no amp. Maybe it is you equipment that you can upgrade to improve sound.

you know stealing songs from friends who dont mind me doing so has been
one great way of improving my music, when i want to look for good music

Lossless will of course sound the best, with 320 CBR and VBR very nice. 192kbps is about the bare minimum I go with. Often times I have a very hard time discerning 320 from lossless although some others can much more easily. I wouldn't re-encode anything unless it's another new rip or what not.
