Joplin. I suppose I should have shown some class and said Bach, Schumann, Brahms, or even Liszt, Rubinstein at the lower end. But I love Joplin's music: it's tuneful, joyous, interesting, unfailingly well harmonized and an endless delight to the ear. I even like it orchestrated (for SMALL ensembles), played on the theatre organ or synthed. If I had to pick a more "serious" composer, it would have to be Ravel.

as much as I love Bach, and Scarlatti, and Bartok, piano music, Beethoven wrote the Op 111 sonata and they didn't...

Haha people used to say that with Vivaldi. There is no class in preference and judgment

I haven't listened to as much contemporary keyboard pieces compared to all the Bach Toccata and Fugues, Inventions, Old Testament etc, but I'm more of the complicated fugue kind of person, compared to the emotionally melodical.

Must be some classics have earned this first place, but it depends on whom you`ve been listening to now. I like J.S.Bach exactly this time, may be on the first place after a month or so will be John Cage or someone else...

I saw that there was a poll on this subject and thought "Messiaen ... he might be there but he probably won't be ... stupid polls." Before the page had loaded, however, I thought again and exclaimed to myself "No, my favourite would be Sorabji ... and there's no way on earth that he will be there ... stupid polls."

So, kudos to OP.

Right now it's Ligeti, but it will undoubtedly swing back around to Bach, like it always does.

It's like coming back home.

JS Bach for me as well. I have a collection of Angela Hewitt recordings, which are my favourite.

I'm afraid I have to go with Chopin. Bach is my favourite composer all-round, and his piano music is exceptional, but piano without Chopin is like violin without Paganini.

How about Frank Bridge?
