no longer available from amazon. maybe they will restock at some point. it was quite a deal. have listened to about half of the collection. everything has been pretty excellent - both in terms of performance and sound. haven't touched the piano sonatas. i doubt they are on par with what i already have. the rest looks good though.

I have listened to 5 cds so far. The sound quality is indeed quite excellent.
A great buy!

Still waiting for the shipment.

not a super-bargain but look at the performers!
Old DGG must have decided it was time to show who has the deepest vaults

A good trend. If only these sets come with decent booklets (not CD-texts)

Sorry I missed this, though I'm of mixed feelings about Beethoven.

I found a nice 22-CD set of Stravinsky that I ordered for $30, though! Stravinsky conducting Stravinsky for some, used to own a nice piece on vinyl of one of his self-conducting masterpieces.

Thanks so much for the original post, didn't realize this type of deal was out there!

Great, but....

Zinman's cycle is out of print now? Interesting.

The concertos are what I own from the contents of this set and they are excellent. Despite receiving the ubiquitous 10/10 from Classics Today, I find that all of the concertos are indeed worth much more the six dollars they cost individually. The Triple concerto is a special treat for those only used to Karajan on DG.

As for the symphonies, I wish Sony/RCA had been more creative. Zinman's cycle was good, but I never really found it as engaging as other cycles. Sony has Bruno Walter's, Leonard Bernstein's (admittedly not a great choice), Gerorge Szell and RCA has recordings of Reiner, Munch, Leinsdorf, and possibly Ormandy as well.

As for the concertos, like I said, they are very good, but RCA and Sony could have used Perehia, Fleisher, Serkin, or Rubenstein for the Piano concertos, and perhaps Heifetz, Francescatti, Lin for the Violin Concerto.

All of this is nitpicking, but especially with the symphonies, those sets are hard to find or very expensive. By all means a great deal, but with some more imagination, it could have been tremendous.

yeah. good performances, but that set needs to be about half that price. as of now, it is a little over 10 dollars per CD. for that amount, i would rather assemble my own collection. since these box sets are never the exact performances of your liking - even if good - the price needs to be the incentive to purchase. this isn't.

i agree. a great trend. the big labels need to do more of this. there are plenty of box sets out there, but very few with good performances throughout. labels like EMI, DG, Decca, Philips, Sony could really put out some amazing box sets. and if priced generously, it would attract new listeners, resulting in more sales.

i would leave it. but i also wouldn't be surprised if they eventually told you that the item was unavailable.

i still haven't finished the beethoven set. but my current CD just ended. here is my chance.

$125/23 CDs is a good deal less than 10 dollars per CD. Also I bet in a few weeks you will be able to find the set on amazon or cduniverse for less than $100.
