Which headphone would you suggest for me?

OK, let's settle this, once and for all! I've been contemplating far too long about this. Which of the above headphones would you suggest for my musical tastes? I listen to rock, metal, electronic, and some hip-hop as my main music, but I do listen to classical and jazz occasionally, though the headphones don't have to be awesome at it. Here's some things I'd like the headphones to have:

-Tight, punchy bass that reaches low: This one is a must for me. I can't stand flubby, overpowering mid-bass when I'm listening to electronic, rock, and such. The bass should be audible enough to be able to say, "Man, this bass is tight (literally) sounding!"

-Not too bright: I listen to music pretty much all day long, so I don't want my ears to be all worn out by the end of the day.

-Mids good: Mids are important, as vocals are my thing. The guitars should stand out pretty well, too.

That's it. Judge accordingly, based on the above.

Wow - that is a little difficult. Since you like rock and guitar I would suggest the Grado -- especially since you are not spending a lot of money (in Head-fi terms) on headphone and amp-- the Grado can sound fine without amp-- cannot say the same for the headphone choices. But given you want to listen for long times - I am not sure the brightness of the Grado or its sound signature would not tire you out after a while.

Given the midrange preference I would suggest the 701 but a good amp for the money but bass is most important to you so the 701 is not the best.


O well I am going to suggest the Grado. Since I have not heard the Denon or Audio-Technica 900-- if it like the W11JPN sound signature then it will sound good but I might not suggest it for metal, electronic. If it sounds like the L3000 then it might sound really good with great bass, guitar sounds.

SR225 with flats hands down.

I've heard all of those except the AD900 (though I used to own AD2000).

I suggest the following just in case your $400 budget includes a source.

Source: E-MU 0404 USB (~$150)
Headphones: Ultrasone Proline 650 as modded in this thread (~$185)
Amp:cMoy Bass Boost (cMoyBB) (~$46)

For your taste, I Would suggest the beyerdynamic DT770 (80 ohm) with a Corda move. The bass in the DT770 is a little weightier than punchy but it does get down low, the mids are very good, and the highs on that particular model are a bit recessed in comparison with the other 770s...........and it sounds good with the corda move. You could probably manage that at about 400.

If I had an amp, from that list only the K701 peak my interest.

Unamped, well I love my AD900s

And I completely disagree with Mahler. From every post I read about DT770 or 880 is they are basshead headphones. For your music, I woudn't dare spend that much money on headphones, unless I only cared about bass.

I'd try all the phones you listed in your poll before I tried the DT770, just cause overpowered bass for electronic, rock and metal kills the music

I think that the dt770s are basshead cans. They have huge bass and thats pretty much it, IMHO. Although I have never heard them through a move, I doubt that would fix that big problem completely.

Tight, punchy bass that reaches low, Not too bright, Mids good... a well-amped hd650 fits that bill. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your view), my amp is at the end of its rope.

Anyway, in accordance with your pre-screens... Add my vote to the SR225's, but depending on your source you can probably forgo the amp and instead invest in some new ear foams and headphone band and save some cash at the same time =).

Definitely, the HD600s or 650s are the way to go but you don't want to amp that with a cheapo amp.................if you can stretch your budget to 500 you'd be set with a top quality setup. In the end I may choose the 600s, they are a bit tighter and more neutral.

I'd say HD600 or HD650. ( HD580's would work too if you can find them )

good mids
nice tight bass
not bright

I can't recommend Grados specially since you don't want bright phones and you want tight nice bass.

what is your source since you talking about getting an amp

EMU 0404 USB is not on the America website. Only on the Asia one. On the America site only lists the EMU 0404 PCI for $129.

The stats look great. I'm interested in one, too. But I don't want PCI. The 0202 has CS4392 D/A chipset. The 1616 has the flagship CS4398 D/A chipset. But the 0404 has the AK4396 D/A chipset. I've never heard of that one. Has some incredible specs though.

If anyone knows where to get the 0404 USB in the US, let me know so I can buy it, too. Thanks!

The balanced outputs are also the line outs, correct? They are 1/4" so I will need to get a Y-connector with two male 1/4" to one male 1/8" for my amp. I could just use the STNR 117dba 1/8" stereo output. But how can you adjust the gain to be safe for your amp? Sounds like a lot of stuff to play with.

Perhaps you could consider the K601. You won't be as worried about a really decent amp as with the K701, and you get a great sound just without really fine details.
