a new budget IEM: Maximo iM-390 - Page 2

Have any of you guys with the iM-390s tried the "higher" iM-490 model? I am curious as to what the differences are...

Cool... thanks for the impressions Very refreshing to read a review that states a sonic reference point (KSC75). This is a practice/style I wish more reviewers would adopt.

(cringe) Crinkley driver IEMs (cringe)

Watch out for crinkley-driver IEMs. If you insert or remove them too fast, you can theoretically damage the driver diaphragm, or worse yet, damage your hearing. I have a crossroads X3 that does that. I have to be very careful removing and inserting them.

Looking forward to more impressions

thanks for the heads up kramer, I wasn't aware. The old has an M printed on the baffle (look at the close up of the image on the link - the port hole is tiny) while the newer prod versions are polished with a larger port.

@sachu, my phone is the Fusic by LG. The SQ is appalling and it is noisy as anything.

They look like a universal tip. From what I can make out of the Shure tips, they should fit..dB

Oh!...can't believe i missed that..
so they were in production then...hmm..well that really would put me in a bind if i were buying them from a reseller like amazon or buy.com.

The newer version is the way to go as mentioned before.

I have that crackling problem when i insert and remove (and sometimes when i laugh or yawn) these IEMs. They are much more pronounced on the left driver than on the right. Wonder why?

Wow dB -- are you saying that I am going to like these more than Super.Fi 3's or ER6is? Are they really in the range of better single driver IEMs?

I'll let you all be the judge of that, but to me, they easily bested the superfi's..dB

dB is correct. And for the older ones, the "M" (similar to an @ symbol) can be seen fairly clearly when the product is still in package.

The older ones are still in the channel (Amazon, Buy, Ebay, etc) and may take a little time to fully sell through. I'll try to update and/or provide any possible suggestions.

Just so I am clear on this...the image displayed on the Maximo web site is what the old version looks like?

Correct. It's the "M" as visible on the left earphone in the photo.

I tried taking a picture last night but my cameras macro feature leaves a lot to be desired. Perhaps Sachu could post an image - I know his camera takes some fine images..dB

Anyone know what version buy.com is selling?
Maximo says that they are likely to have old stock for another 4-5 weeks so the under $20 price w/rebate and GCO are out.

jant71, I'm sure it goes without saying, but please post impressions when you have them.
Sure will. I have the PK2 and modded Super.fi 3's as my portable phones now. I agree with many that the PK2's are a notch above the X3's overall. We'll see how these stack up being about half the price of the X3's.

I don't know which version Buy.com is selling. The thought had crossed my mind that the rebate offer might be a way to clear out old stock. Just a thought, no idea if they are the new or old versions.

If the older versions have a smaller pressure relief hole, they might just crap out. That might be a main reason for the new version. So, even if I get an old version, I may end up having to test the lifetime warranty and should get the new ones back.
