maestrobation Part II - Page 2

Here's a picture of my baby.

Not quite as radical in the power supply as Boze's but with all the other mods.

Carlo, do you think you'll be offering remote control installs for the DACT if Bent Audio releases a kit in the next couple months? If so I'll be sending my amp back to you again.

Nikko,

Yup. When Bent Audio finalizes the production units I'll be picking one up for your amp

(I know you know what's going on but some people may be confused by the pic you posted, the following info is for them)

Nikko's Melos has Holco resistors at the input stage, a decision based on his particular setup and tastes (I also like that both the SFI power amp and the Melos will have the same input resistors). When Nikko took those pics obviously the DACT wasn't part of the mods yet. His amp has almost all the options that are listed on my website, save instead of an Alps series stepped attenuator he's upgrading to a DACT CT-2. When its done balance will be ditched from the signal path.

carlo.

You know I've been very, very happy with my stock Melos. I knew I shouldn't have read this thread.....Beautiful work.

lextek.. I have noticed lately you have been browsing and asking questions about various amps, headphones etc....perhaps modding your melos would be the end to your madness? I am hoping it will be for my own.

I am very, content with my Melos. I've had itlonger than most amps I've owned. I don't think I'd mod it until it needed repair. So the madness is under control. But I can still look and listen.

Who picked the name?

When I saw it for the first (and copule other times) I misread "maestrobation" as "masturbation".

Is it only me, or...?

I had been contemplating modding my own Melos. I had also been contemplating selling it (in fact, I had listed it a long time ago, but never had got a bite). What finally occurred is nothing. I like having it as a preamp with headphone capabilities in my computer room setup. I found tubes I like with it. It's been utterly reliable for me. Oddly, of many possible amp changes I've been considering lately, the Melos hasn't entered into the picture at all (although the RKV, EAR, and/or even ZOTL may eventually depart). The Melos found its place at last. I like mine just the way it is

Boze,

You still there? Or are you just enjoying the new sounds so much you just don't have time to post some thoughts? If Carlo worked on it, I'm sure it blows away anything Melos ever dreamed for this unit.

Once you get some time on the tubes and amp let us know how it sounds after those wonderful mods you had done. I'm sure a few here, Lextek included, are refreshing their screens to make sure they don't miss your posts on how it sounds.

Enjoy Boze!

Hi Lextec, I noticed you're in Connecticut. What town? I'm from Winsted, though I'm presently living in Colorado.

Carlo does very high quality work, he's put a lot of effort into finding the best combination of parts, and his prices are fair. He's also a hell of a nice guy. But I'd like to offer some advice.......if it aint broke don't fix it! If you have a photentiometer in your amp and you want to send it off for mods, you have two options for preserving the photentiometer. Either forget about the mods or remove the photentiometer before shipping it to him.

I have very high expectations for what my preamp should sound like when I get it back. If it doesn't obliterate my stock amp I'll probably agonize over ever sending it because I knew I was playing Russian Roulette. I've owned my amp since it was new nearly six years ago and really wanted to keep it orginal, aside from the upgrades on the PCB.

I live in Kensington. About 20 minutes south of Hartford. Home of the Mini-meets. I really enjoy listening to music with the Melos. Should my Melos need some attention I know where to send it.
