The real question is who are car enthusiasts and why do nice cars cost as much as a hi-fi system?

What do you do with nice cars anyway? Get up to the speed limit really quickly?

Very cool read. The way I see it is that music is very important in life. Many people do spend $18,000 on their Harley motorcycles or $35,000 on their their sports cars. That's fine but to me, if I can afford it, I would rather spend the money on a state of the art audio system and experience the sonic rich life like quality. Hearing a great legend play his instrument in a life like way is truly one of the greatest joys in life.

When I'm done setting up my rig, it will cost around $10,000 and probably take about 5 years for me to accomplish since I have to save money and I won't be sacrificing the quality of my life. In other words, I can still eat steak and not eat Ramen noodles. If you think about it, $10,000 to $20,000 is not really a lot of money compared to all the money you make in your lifetime. It's definitely worth it to make an investment at least once in your life for a great sounding audio system. And to upgrade components of your rig every 5 years or so by spending a couple thousand dollars. It's actually affordable to most middle class audio enthusiasts, as long as you are not in serious debt and you don't have a bad spending problem. To me, this is not crazy audiophile madness and it is sense-able.

That said, a cheap boom box can also be great too. I have a $150 RCA brand CD shelf system and it sounds great. If I was very poor and could not afford any upgrades, I could be happy with it too.

that's what i always said. if you consider that a completely awesome audio system costs less than the brand new corvette many mid-life-crisis guys get, it doesn't seem nearly as bad!

meanwhile, i still need a headphone amp...
