A good friend of mine was bragging about his newly bought Bose Around-Ear QC2 headphones. He laughed at me when I told him that my $250 and $150 headphones sound better than his Bose. I didn't even bother trying out his Bose but I did let him put on my Grado SR325i and Sennheiser HD580 on his head.
His exact words: "Pure ownage. I lose."
He returned his Bose the next day and placed an order for Grado RS1.
I hate Bose products but I have to say that the Bose system in my Acura CL Type-S sounds pretty damn good.

Indeed.

I too have been blessed with friends that can hear the difference between good and bad. A friend of mine wanted to buy my HD600 w/ Silver Dragon after hearing them the first time. I talked him out of it since he didn't have the proper gear to power them.

there's no doubt grado's sound much better than bose but if he's looking for noise cancelling or isolation then grado is probably be several steps in the opposite direction.

...I think his buddy would have noticed eventually since he tried two open headphones.

I can't speak for the QCs, but my room mate has a pair of Triports that I got to try the other day and they honestly weren't too bad for the amount of listening. I didn't get to listen for long, but the were obviously better than my Accura SR-660s (they had better be), and could probably hold their own against Grado SR-80s, though I would have to compare those side by side to be sure. They are still much more expensive than the SR-80s and felt rather flimsy (but astoundingly comfortable), but had a tremendous amount of isolation in comparison. So you would be paying a lot more for comfort and isolation, but they weren't too bad.

Some people care, some people don't. Generally, BOSE is just overpriced.

Well the silly thing is: if you are willing to a buy Bose, clearly you care to buy something nice. If you are willing to buy Bose but think everything else is worse - then you want to pay for the prestige... which is ignorance at this point.

It's like bose is the Andrea Boccelli of the audio world. Anybody truly steeped in opera music denounces Boccelli, but Boccelli is very appealing to non opera lovers. Anyone truly well versed in audiophile sound will be put off by the boomy sound of Bose products. But most of the world thinks both Bose and Boccelli are the paradigm of their medium.
