I like NGE but not for the reasons most people like it. To me it's a hilarious parody of anime clichés.
- In most anime the kids have an impossible task. Hey how about saving the world? Check.
- Let's make the best anti hero ever. Shinji. We must make him uber pathetic and whimpy. Check.
- Let's introduce sexual frustration. Rei and Askua. Check-a-roo. Shall I mention the movie sequence? lolz
- Rightio, let's introduce a mother figure seeing Shinji's is dead. Misato. Let's make her kiss him in the movie. Pseudo incest ftw.
- Next up we shall have creepy gay tenancies male character for the fan girls. Here's Kaworu. We'll create sympathy for Shinji when he kills him. Check!
- We need an evil guy. Why not evilise Shinji's dad? Oh we must sympathise with the 'hero' now.
- Let's bamboozle people with flawed psychoanalysis so the fans will feel like they learned something. Check.
Wow so we took common anime elements and stretched them beyond what is culturally accepted and surprisingly people love it! We'll create a 'psychoanalysis based ending' and see what happens. Oh people are outraged? Well I'll just make a movie that messes up everything further. Wow who would have thought people actually like that? Ok, you are clearly all mad.
So I like NGE. It's a brilliant stab at anime fans. It has a tonne of clones too like RahXephon and Fafner and I guess you could say it created a sub genre. Whimpy effeminate boys who must save the world. Woot!
