Try Dream Theater's latest. IMO it's audiophile quality

Opeth's Blackwater Park has an excellent sound quality and Ghost Reveries comes in second imo.

uh no. its Vlado mastered. completely flat dynamics with fatiguing overpunchy (ie compressed) kick drum and audible distortion in places. shame cos its got fairly well balanced mix otherwise

LTE is far better than the Dream theater albums, I feel something wrong with the sound of the Portnoy drums, always...not sure fi the same happen to you guys, but iti s like the low freq are always over emphasised...I have heard many drums in front of me, i ahve a couple of friends that are professional drummers, and I have never heard one that sounds like that...

I totally agree with this.I watched them live and as I was very near to stage,I can easily say that Portnoy's drums sounds somehow different on records.I also
dont like any of their albums in SQ wise.

I thought the quality on Images and Words was excellent. But the latest, as well as Octavarium and Train of Thought, sound off to me.

Don't know if it's audiophile quality but IMO the newer Arch Enemy albums (e.g. Doomsday Machine) are very clear and good recordings.

I recommend Chaostar's self titled album. Its very clear and well recorded. Though it's not exactly typical metal. Its neoclassical or maybe gothic. But its still very well recorded.

Nine Inch Nails SACD version of The Downward Spiral is pretty good sounding.

What kind of IEM's would you guys recommend for metal? On my cheap creative IEMs fast double bass (Hellhammer, Pete Sandoval, etc...) blurs into a low rumble. I was happy with my UE 5pro until they broke . Besides, they hurt my ears after an hour or so. What IEMs do you guys use?

No question that Westone ES2 is the way to go. Or step up and try the UE11...
