Last Minute B-Day for Wife! Headphones?

Fellow headphone nutjobs,
Call me a moron, call me smart as a sack of wet hammers, but I'm in a pickle.

I'm out of town, and was trying to do the ordering thing for a B-day present for my wife. The thing I ordered is now suddenly unavailable. So now I'm forced with trying to order something in time for, hopefully Monday.

My wife has a 5.5 gen Ipod, and uses the stock crapbuds. She's an accomplished baroque flautist, but these days works in an office. She listens to the pod every day, either in the office, during lunch or on the bus. Occasionally she may listen while riding the bike, but generally not because she wants to be aware of what's going on.

Her musical tastes range from Baroque performed with original instruments, through Depeche Mode, Cheb Mami, Nusrat Fateh ali Khan, and the Berlin Philharmonic banging out it's loudest version of Mahler.

Preferably I'd like to spend less than a hundred, but given the right circumstances, I'm willing to spend more. Earbuds are my target, as she's not a Vegas DJ.

She appreciates quality, but is by no means a "-phile." In other words, she's happy when I buy a lovely XBR LCD TV, but is uninterested in anything but the result. As such, I think looks could be very important.

So to cut to the chase, I thought about getting her some V-Moda Vibes in red, but I read some of the craptastic reviews on Amazon about them falling apart and not working. This disinterests me slightly. I am reading something about a second gen of the vibes, but Amazon has no provision seemingly to chose those. I've also read about these new Vibe duos, but only briefly. My wife is not an iphoner, and has little interest in becoming one. Are the duo's different in any substantive way other than the mic?

So: recommendations are exceedingly welcome, in fact implored. What, fare Head-Fi'ers can I buy for my friendly music listening spouse, that will with some luck and expedited shipping arrive at her doorstep on the fair morn' of Monday?

Thanks for the help, and rock on, even if you're rocking out to Taverner.

p.s. A few months ago I picked up (and shortly returned) some shure E2c's; neither of us liked them; I would say the right word to describe our impression of them would be douchealicious. She did however very much like the Sony something or other's that sell for a little less than $100 at the big boxes, although they too were imperfect and were returned. But I'd rather put the kybosh on the E2c's than the Sony's, as an example.

Ety ER6i is what I have recommended to several friends with similar specs to your wife. I don't think you want to get her Vibes, myself, if she's got any musical taste. I had a pair and gave them away--I would have felt guilty selling them, though if her car shakes "BOOM, BOOM, BOOM" as she drives down the street, from the 24" speaker behind the back seat, they'll be just the thing for her!

I just realized that that was my first post! Well, for my second I'd like to say some platitudes like "cool forum," "so there is a whole community of dorks like me?" and last but not least "yippee! my wallet is going to need to do some serious thigh stretches for the workout it will be getting thanks to you people!"

But seriously, I read the reviews on Amazon (always a beacon of the best, most highly accurate truth in all things" that said the bass was actually a bit subdued on the vibes....not true then?

Thoughts on Westone UM1'ness?
I like the made in the US factor, and they look a little less medical instrumentish than the Ety's. But sound is of course an enormous factor. I once listened to some UM2's, and although I was probably bourbon-hazed, they sounded like a happy pig in a pit. (That's good)

If you want to stick with buds, the Yuin PK2s are likely your best bet (do a search here at Head-Fi and you will be hard pressed to find many negative comments about them), but I'm not sure you will be able to get them in time. You could always buy them from a Head-Fi sponsor, such as TTVJ in hopes that they would ship fast, and they have a great return policy in the event that she doesn't like them to boot. As for IEMs, I don't have enough experience with any models at the $100 or less price range, I'm afraid.

Whatever you decide upon, make sure you use her old 'crapbuds' to enter the "Destroy My iBuds Contest" I am currently running. There is a link to the contest in my signature. Perhaps you can win her a nice prize package and give it to her as a belated gift in addition to her new birthday headphones!

Good luck.

I meant to say IEM's, rather than earbuds. Rookie mistake. Then again, that sack of wet hammers thing may hit closer to home than I thought!

You know...this is probably the only time you're going to hear me recommend a Bose product, but you can pick up the Bose IEs for about $100 at your local Best Buy, try them out, and return them and purchase CDs or movies, or a new microwave if she decides she doesn't like them. They are good sounding IEs. I've heard them briefly, and they definitely don't deserve the bashing they get on these boards.

If you need an IEM fast, BestBuy or any of the major retailiors sell the sure SE line which are universialy praised, and are held in higher esteem then the bose by most head-fiers. (SE210s are ~150 i think)

Also, RadioShack carries Ultimate Ears SuperFi. 3 IEMs for under 100$. I also havent heard the SF3s but own SF5pros and think their brilliant. Go to radioshack and get SF3s + a boostaroo headphone amp. THe package will cost you ~ 100$ and will make a great gift for a non-audiofile.

Im using a Boostaroo revalution with my SF5pros until my new amp comes in, and though its not a great amp, there is a noticible improvement in SQ.

Select fast shipping and request 'rush order option'. It is going to add to the price, but it is a good option and will get there on time. If you feel up for it - you can take one of the higher super-fi models for even more fun. (I am under impression that super-fi 5 is the sweet spot).

ide recomend getting a small amp with any IEM. My ipod drove my SF5pros fine, but i decided to try the cheap amp, and there was a world of difference. They went from 'a good IEM' to 'an involving, fun IEM'. (i cant wait to plug my headphones into an amp that costs more the 25$)

But if theres a radioshack or bestbuy around, check out sures and UEs. You wont go wrong with either one.
