Grado SR60 is a very popular starter headphone (70$), and has an amazing sound, which can be heard without a headphone amp. The alisandor MS1 is called the best headphone under 100$, which is also in the quasi-grado family. You will not be dissipointed with anything that says GRADO on it, and thats what ide recomend for a first headphone (they were my first and ive been slowly moving up the range).

Also, welcome to headfi, sorry bout your wallet

I suggest the Alessandro MS1 or Sennheiser HD555, if found for under $100. You should soon be hearing from the fanboys of the other under $100 cans and probably those who will suggest spending more than your $100 budget.

I would look into the Equation Audio RP-21. They have a good price performance ratio. Keeping in mind they are a closed headphone.

What kind of setting are these headphones for? Open headphones usually sound better, so something like ~$100 Grados or Alessandros would probably be best. If you want some sound isolation or something like that, then closed headphones would be better - in your price range, Sony MDR-V6's or Sennheiser HD280's are probably best.

If you want canalphones, then you could try out Shure E2C or its competitors (e.g., V-moda vibe and whatever the ER ones are in that price-range).

x2

I started with HD555 and still using it, but the MS1 seems to be the more popular alternative here.

I'm a great fan of the highly addictive MS-1, and being more and more drawn to the MDR-7506 which has a nicer gray sticker than the red one on the V6.

You could try Audiotechnica ATH-A500s. However, some Grado S-60s would be great, or Sennheiser HD555s if you can find them.

x3 on either MS-1 or HD555
