I would suggest the A900, I love my ATH-A900LTD.

I hadn't considered those, but won't those be quite light on the bass? Also the design seems to be an acquired taste!

I don't really want to go down the closed route, as for home use I much prefer open cans.

Judging by the poll in that thread, it's even stevens between the A900 and the HD595 - so given my preference to open cans, it looks like the 595's may be best!

without reading all the above:

Don't buy SR80 if you want to game with it b/c that simpy doesn't work. Direct phones don't work, at least not with my ksc-75.

I think my px-100 sound alot like my HD595 which I really like for gaming.

I don't believe the poll numbers tell the whole story; the people who actually took the time to post a reply provided more useful insight than those who just took the poll. How many Head-Fiers had both at the same time and did an A/B comparison?

On a completely different note, I tried out my Stax on BF2 last night just for fun. DA-10 to KGSS to Sigma Pro and Lambda Signature. The Sigma Pro is definatly not a gaming headphone. The Lambda Sig was much better but still nowhere as good as the A900LTD.

DT990 would be great but watch out... if you buy a version over 70 ohms, you'll have problems getting some decent volume and not to mention the lack of deep bass extension you're looking for.

My vote goes for HD-580, they work well without serious amplification even if most people say the opposite.

I listen to music my HD580 without amplification and at max volume almost daily, but this volume to me is somewhere between normal and moderately loud. Good enough for many for casual listening, sure, but not even close to a "rock out" volumes. If wanting bass punch though, I wouldn't recommend the HD580 without an amp because it's not there.

The HD580 is rarely recommended for gaming, but like the HD280 the HD580 may be a good choice for FPS gaming; I don't know. However, without an amp it would not be a good choice if looking for good low frequency sound effects.

------------------------

Edit: just shortly after posting the above, I modded my HD580 so now it is louder and with a lot more bass, stronger mids, and a more balanced treble. I now recommend an unamped and modded HD580 for music when driven from a PC. Too hard to say how it would compare with other cans for gaming.

Like usual, I'm going to expand your budget by $20 and buy you the AD900.

The AD700 is AWESOME, but I wish I woulda saved up for the AD900 which is supposedly better in every way, especially bass & soundstage.

For $220, I think this is one hard can to beat: http://www.audiocubes.com/product/Au...eadphones.html

Well that's definitely a plus, as I love my PX100's!

Thanks guys, I will seriously think about the A900 too as it has had a lot of recommendations. I was looking at going for an open can, but am willing to look at this if it's as good as everyone is saying. Just one question about them though, how comfortable are they for long-session listening?

The A900s are very comfortable. I can listen to them for hours without any discomfort. Some have experienced their ears getting too warm or sweaty with the A900 pleather earpads. I personally don't have those problems but YMMV.

Thanks for all of the advice guys, in the end though I went for the Sennheiser HD595's. Mainly due to my fondness of their 'sound' and also the fact that they have good support in the UK.

Thanks for everyone's help!
