Open vs. Closed Darths

Thread Starter
I'm sure there are people here with both open and closed V3 Darths.

I'm probably going to order my second pair of Darths some time soon and was wondering how the "new" open version affects the good old Darth sound?

I'm leaning towards going with the open design, it looks really good to my eye and since my first Darths were closed, they'd be something completely different..

not much different. wider but not as tall soundstage. less of a pounding bass slam and more detailed is what I heard. better imo but Larry likes closed better as does Skylab. either one is a nice can.

less bass? NOOOOOOOOOOO

they do look pretty nice though.

doesnt the guy at headphile (larry? can't remember atm) make the open ones and have an optional cover that you can stick in so it becomes closed?

Anyone owned both open and closed Darthbeyers? I also would like to know if there is any difference.

Yes, Larry offers covers.

Obviously, the seal is not as good as solid wood, but it's close enough, if you want the added benefit of being able to have them be open at times.

I'd like to hear from owners of both the open and closed darths too. I'm planning on getting me a pair of closed(for now) darth v3 at the end of this year.
If the closed has more bass slam or impact then I think that will be my choice.

yeah i would love more info on this match up from more people. I was told that the open with covers darths didn't sound as good as the closed by another head-fi member possibly bushguy but not sure. To be honest i think these v2 beyers(closed) i have might actually sound better open im just worried i might be wrong.Tha is why i am looking at getting the open with covers so i will make the correct purchase either way, however does the open with covers sound any different if i just order open darths?also how much difference is there between the closed and the closed with covers?

open with covers, open or closed whats best?

Has larry ever made any mention of the type of wood giving a different sound?

I seem to recall his preferred wood to be Black Ebony.

I asked him about the differences between two woods, and he stated they all have subtle differences, and that I should buy Darths in all the various woods if I want to hear them all.

I wish I had that much money. LOL

Yeah, his responses are not mean but they dont give you a warm and fuzzy feeling

I, for one, think we need a Darth Beyer smiley.

I prefer the Opens b/c the closed have too much slam for me. The Opens go just as low but don't pound my ear canal like the closed. Otherwise, they are very similar. I get a better sense of air with the Opens too for obvious reasons.
