You've already got optical out on your Mac.

erm, yes, I meant the optical out on the mac. Most DACs I've seen are firewire or usb.

But you guys are right, the noise is not noticable with higher impedence phones (or in my case speakers). I heard radioshack makes some sort line attenuator, maybe I'll pick one up. Thanks.

I thought maybe a cmoy might help since it has a high input impedence (or at least I thought) but the iem's are still as noisy and my hd600s are not at all.

The noise you're describing sounds like GSM interference. Is your phone anywhere near your laptop?

The specs for the Mac audio output specify 32 ohms as the minimum load. Your iem's are probably less.

Presumably you usually run everything through your Emu 0404 and the HeadFive anyway and you're looking for a portable solution. The Turtle Beach USB adapter would be the cheap solution. If you want amplification as well you could consider the MOVE or the D1, both with built-in DAC's.

I'm coming from a PC with a dedicated soundcard and headphone amp, so my standards are probally higher than alot of people's. but either way there is a ton of noise from the headphone out. High impedence phones help, but its still there. I might invest in the turtle beach thingy temporarily.

I just tested with no sound between my macbook pro and my 2nd gen nano with my westone es2 IEM and I think the macbook has a bit more noise. However, i think with music it sounds fine. same with the nano. I've never used a PC though only a mac mini, macbook, Imac, and macbook pro. I thought the Imac had the best sound of the bunch but I never compared back and forth at the same time.

If I plug my IEM in to a home headphone amp there is even more hiss, but on two high end integrated amps(lynn and naim) primarily intended for speakers I get no hiss at all...

I used to use an amp and fancy line out dock from alo but decided the extra bulk was not worth the minimal increase in sound quality. It did however make everything black and silent with no music or in quiet passages.
