HD650 uses HD580 drivers?? - Page 19

AlanLee,

Cool! It's incredible.

I wonder if the big surprise is that the HD650 is at the end of its production life, and is now being cobbled together from makeshift and leftover parts in order to save money, as someone above as already noted.

The Senn rep saying, "And now get back to speculating about the HD700/800!" makes me wonder if the new can - if they ever manage to get it out, considering the artherosclerosis in the Sennheiser new product pipeline - will replace the increasingly cobbled 650.

There is at least one: OP!

My friend recently ordered some HD650's from a foreign distributor and I went over to his house to take a listen. I was expecting to be blown away. He has a really good setup to drive them too.

Upon listening to the first few songs I was impressed but it wasn't really all that I had hoped. I told him, "man these things sound similar to my 580's at home".

Well I read this forum and went back over to his house straight away to do a little inspecting, taking of course my 580's with me. Sure enough, inside his cans we find the dreaded "580 makro" stamp on his drivers. I plug my real 580's into his setup and we both find them identical in sound. My friend is really dissapointed right now and depressed and I really hope this is not Sennheiser's fault.

Something weird is going on here.
Not a good sign more and more of those hd580 stamped hd650 headphones turn up. I am glad i got the real deal early on when they just came out! Believe me, a real hd650 doesn't sound anything near a hd580!

OMG! This is serious stuff.

You just can't install a pair of drivers from a $100 pair of obsolete headphones and market it as a $500 statement product. I would be furious if my 650 sounds like a 580, it would be like BMW fitting a 325i engine in their M3 and sell it as such. What a scam.

We should all post this thread on every user-review website ever and get the word out. I consider it our responsibility as headphone afficionados to inform the public of these things.

Please stop with the whining comments. You'd think we were wrong to feel aggrieved.

When you're involved and not just an ignorant bystander, you can comment on how you feel.

It's your responsibility to spread rumor and conjecture? Give me a break. Someone with alleged 580 drivers in their 650s should send them to Sennheiser, that's the only way this debate ends.

And this talk of replacing forum representation, holy cow some people around here think we're a lot more important than we really are. Oh teh DRAMA!

What's wrong with Sennheiser stepping up and clarifying this for everyone here and now?

Actually, as you should know, Head-Fi does represent a very important focal point for tens of thousands of serious headphone hobbyists around the world. I would guess you're not involved in marketing for any audio industry, are you?

Thats how it should work, but you forget its not practical for some people. You might live in the Australian outback and the 650s being your only means of listening to music.
So you'd pack them, pay for delivery, wait ages for Senneiser to do something, then wait ages for a returned pair. All for an error which might be ineffectual, i.e. unfortunate mix up, but okay part.

All we'd like is an open letter from Sennheiser explaining. If its an error, 'fess up.

Yes it is. It'd not be 'rumour and conjecture' if we had that letter.

This is true, but Sennheiser is also a very large company that sells things other than headphones, like microphones and wireless systems, for example. I would imagine their microphone sales alone outweigh their headphone sells by a fairly substantial margin.

They sold headphones before Head-Fi, they'd certainly continue selling them long after we were gone. :|

Yeah, you're probably correct.

BTW, I've used Sennheiser microphones and wireless systems for many years, and have always preferred EV and AKG mics over Sennheiser FWIW. Their wireless systems are ok for low cost rigs.

I just think it would be very foolish of them to knowingly alienate so many customers at once, when a simple letter of explanation would put this whole thing to rest, once and for all.

Would have to be pretty ****ing convincing at this point for me to believe the explanation

Returning them soon.

Well, of course, along with the eplanation, I would expect appropriate resolution for all affected customers as well.

Sure, HF is important but look at the way members are launching themselves off a cliff in this thread. Really, it's pretty amazing how the mob mentality works around here. What if the driver had said hd800 on it?

No, you'd pick up the phone and realize that the old way of doing things is sometimes still the quickest route to a resolution.

See above.
Has anyone who received 580 stamped HD650 contacted Sennheiser headquarter for the explanation?
That should have been the first thing to do, just posting here not going to get your issue solved.
Regarding AlanLee's comments, . . . well we don't know what his and his friend setup is. Considering that both HD580 and HD650 share the same house sound signature, from less than stellar setup detecting major difference between the two might be quite challenging, esp. if you don't want to hear one.

Let's just say that I'm not that loaded to afford to have even the slightest doubt about their genuity.

Also I'm not exactly in need of them enough to be bothered with this issue any further. I'll still have the high end studio monitors for critical use and Pk1s will serve the headphone purposes more than enough (sleeping).

Thanks Sennheiser, never again.
