Mine are nothing like that. The big ovally bit is silver.

Which someone mentioned...

Yeah, that's just a different material now being used. Sennheiser says it doesn't affect sound. It's unfortunate, though, because I think the black looks much better through the grills.

I am also waiting for Sennheiser's proper answer. If we don't get the answer, it would be hard for me to recommend Senn's products to my friends.

This is argument is getting goofy. REAL 650s HAVE to have different drivers than the 580/600 driver. The only way they could be the same drivers is if they put a pair of my old stinky socks, all wadded up and such, in front of the 580 drivers to make the 650s sound the way they do.

Ironically the gmail I sent to Sennheiser on Friday got stopped because of an error. I resent it via hot-babemail.

Components of a particular product need to be uniquely identified so they can be "issued" to the assembly department when production planners decide to build a product. This is usually done in lot sizes that give maximum production efficiency. Each product such as HD580, HD600, HD650 will have a bill of material listing all parts and procedures needed to build it. In a perfect world the process would repeat itself over and over throughout the production life of the product. In reality, things change and decisions are made during this period.

IMO, it does not make sense to identify the component as "hd580" if it was intended to be used in all three models. BUT, who knows? Maybe that's the way Senn does it. They can do what they want...

So, why is it found in some HD650 models? Well, I don't believe that a part marked "hd580" would nornally be used in the HD650. So, here are my thoughts :

A) Some HD650s got built with the wrong part. Wrong parts got issue to the assembly dept and the assembler(s) did not notice the error.
B) The component is actually the correct one but marked incorrectly. In this case, managment would have made a decision to use it as is.
C) If the HD650 was nearing the end of its production life, parts shortages caused the last few lots to be cobbled together with remaining inventory. Again, this would involve a management decision.

I also agree the the Senn Rep's comments above are incomplete and meaningless. I won't say evasive as there could be a translation issue and I prefer to give everyone the beneift of doubt. Hopefully, more info is forthcomming...

^ I do agree, but if it was a mistake, but not an effectual one, surely it would have made its way to be known world-wide, i.e. 'Senn error 101'

I'm guessing an error on their top model would be important?

Maybe this would get Sennheiser to pull their finger out. They know a big chunk of 650-buyers frequent this board.
I certainly am.... .

If I am not mistaken, we haven't heard a single report of any HD580 which drivers carrying that "HD580" mark. Which makes me tend to believe that it's just some sort of internal manufacturer's part number that just coincidentally matched another, out of production, headphone name.

My HD580's don't, but they're one or two years old.

Now lets get back to speculating the HD750 ok?

That was his "Official" answer?

I translate that as, " Stop being a bunch of babies! So youve been had! Lots of companies do it! Just enjoy the music and send us your money! Hey, just consider it as charity, because we need the money to go on vacations and buy new cars! Anyway, you head-Fi people are only about 2% of our sales, so bah!"

Thats how i see it. He couldnt see that some people are seriously worried about their purchase and are considering "NOT BUYING" Sennheiser products anymore, and also telling their friends and making "Do not buy Sennheiser Headphones" threads on all different forums?
This doesnt bother him?

Yeah,that old customer love.
Maybe ill buy Bayer or AKG instead. Actually im thinking about some Koss 950 Electrostatics.

Until i get a satisfying answer about this mess, i will not purchase another Sennheiser headphone "New". Ill buy it used so someone else gets my money, like a fellow Head-Fi member . Maybe i can ask the Sennheiser Rep at the Nov.11 Babylon LongIsland,NY meet.

My HD650 drivers say

sennheiser

in a circle form. It's very hard to see, I had to use a bright light to discern it, and it was still hard.
