well the canamp goes much louder than the h5. because the h5 is fairly low gain, if your source isn't very "hot" then the h5 may not get loud enough
however, the main advantage of the heed over the h5 is "volume" not so much "loudness". the music was richer and in more "volume" it was thicker, more of it even though the loudness was similar (this is completely matched by ear, i have no SPL metre unfortunate). sort of like on your tv/computer monitor there is brightness (loudness) but there is also a contrast setting, making things more vivid, well the canamp was like stepping up to the proper contrast and everything was so much more fuller and richer, making the h5 seem dull in comparison. but only in comparison to the canamp, the h5 is an excellent amp in its own right at its price.
the canamp also has better bass, it would seem the canamp has the power to pump the K701 drivers and really get them shaking, whereas with the h5 some could be excused for thinking the K701s were quite bass shy (i never thought so)
although i'm generally a believer that soundstage is the headphone's job, the canamp did increase the soundstage, actually now that i think about it the canamp really just took everything about the K701 and turned it up a notch, at least everything i loved.
