I wasn't stoked about Heritage when it came out, but after giving it a couple more listens at the start of this year I really love it now. Currently it stands as my third favorite Opeth album, but if it continues to grow on me with each new listen like it has so far, I think it might even have the potential to rise to be my favorite Opeth album. It is my understanding that the new album continues down a similar path as Heritage, so hopefully I will like it or learn to like it as well.
My current top three probably looks something like this:
Most Opeth albums are actually surprisingly universally liked by fans, apart from the new one and Heritage, and maybe their first one or two which I have not heard yet. I guess Watershed also received a somewhat mixed response (from fans at least), but I thought it was pretty good.
