For what kind of music are the HD 580/600 best for?

It seems to me that you either need to upgrade some of your components in the chain such as source and/or amp or you're just looking for boomy, overpowering bass. I've found 580s to be very capable of reproducing really deep bass.

my setup *currently*(will change, m audio revolution will be ordered soon, as well as better interconnects)

aureal sound card > art di/o > corda ha-1 > hd580

bass >35hz is there and sounds great. But below ~35hz it rolls off sharply. I used to use sony v6s and have heard the the bass in songs that isn't there with the 580s. I'll make some sample <35hz wavs and I'll be able to tell exactly where it drops off. I'm not expecting the 580s to be exactly like the v6 low end, but I'd like to at least hear the low notes.

As long as you don't worry too much (reading about what people think is better may colour your perceptions) then everything will sound good to you because it's a great pair of headphones. There might be better headphones for a certain type of music that appeals to your musical tastes more but it's not like it'll be all that bad at it so don't worry.

They sounds very nice with classical and some jazz, definitelly not for rock, or heavy or something bass kicking, thye will give you the idea of the hall, and not in front of you, performance, very good for classical music indeed, but if you like infront of you performance definitelly they are not best suited for....

Are you listening to MP3s? Perhaps that's the cause. I run my 580's through Pioneer DV-414 DVD player and Creek OBH-11 and I get the extreme low bass. Certainly below 35hz. I'm also using a standard cable, so I'm by no means in the stratosphere when it comes to expensive and exotic components.

The HD600 is amazing when listening to large-scale orchestral works, particularly those with very complex textures and lots of instruments.

I do most of my listening to mp3s. The mp3s do have bass. I have listened to this setup with v6s that present a ton of bass.

I'm just wondering if you were hearing bloated, exaggerated bass coming out of the V6's and aren't used to a more "clean" sound. I say this because as I've mentioned earlier, I've never found the 580s to be bass deficient. It's not a perfect headphone, and it has its set of shortcomings, I just don't see low bass being one of them. Try the same setup using CDs and see if the problem persists. Try different interconnects if all else fails.

The V6 is really easy to drive, the 580 is not. You're gonna need more power to get bass from the 580. You should be ok with your corda...

I get plenty of deep bass with my meta42.

hmm, ok, well tonight I'll mess with my configuration to see what I can do to squeeze some more bass out of em. I do have slightly better interconnects on order. Please don't ask what I'm currently using.

I'll grab my roomate's 7506 to a/b to make sure the system is working properly.

The v6s had exaggerated bass, yes. But the 580s, I strain to hear a fraction of the v6 bass.
