I agree, his appearance sound too desperate. I say this as a huge Manson fan that listened to his albums in chronological order and tried to understand every lyric, he is incredibly deep. I mean there are some stuff there that is just brilliant. But the fact that he needs to smear feces to sell is sad. I guess it's a bit of a grey spot: you might be good, but you need to do stupid stuff for people to realize that.
Also, there seems to be a pretty big anti-mainstream bias in this thread. It doesn't surprise me, since most mainstream music we get was never meant to be deep, just a quick hit. But not all mainstream music is bad, and not all underground music is good. Also, stop with the obsession for labels! I doubt Corey Taylor loses his sleep at night because Slipknot aren't considered metal. No they're not, so what? The fact that someone was able to extrapolate his music beyong a certain label should be a good thing, instead they get insulted saying they "aren't REAL [insert music genre here]. People keep saying "Skrillex isn't real dubstep" and I tend to agree, because I like his music more than most dubstep I listen to, and the fast sample shift he uses isn't common in dubstep either. Now you can argue wether it's good or not, but that has nothing to do with fitting in an arbitrarily labelled closet drawer of music.
